Dear God,
You come to us in Jesus who teaches us that the way to happiness is through our love for one another.
Watch over the teachers, students and families of Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we try to be faithful to this teaching.
Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.
Weekly Update From Bernadette Murfitt
Kia ora koutou e te whānau,
This week is Cook Island Language Week. To our Sacred Heart Cathedral School Cook Island families have a wonderful week celebrating your culture, identity and heritage.
This year’s theme for Te ‘Epetoma o te reo Māori Kūki ‘Āirani – Cook Islands Language Week is ‘Ātui’ia au ki te vaka o tōku matakeinanga', which means, "connect me the canoe of my tribe".
The theme focuses on deepening Cook Islands people's connection to their traditions, cultures, and their dialects of their many islands through their familial ties, cultural traditions of their enua, vaka, and the songs, dance, and pe’e (chants) of their family.
Hasn't it been wonderful watching the Olympics over the last couple of weeks and seeing the behind-the-scenes of earning gold, silver, and bronze medals from our Kiwi athletes? So much hard work and perseverance when competing at the high international level (I must admit I have been going to bed a bit on the late side).
Thank you to our netball and basketball coaches and managers. As a school we are in awe of the commitment you give that enables our students to be part of a team. We all know the importance of being physical and playing sport encourages this.
We as a staff are very proud of the learning activities that we plan and deliver here at Sacred Heart Cathedral School. Our staff are dedicated and experienced in teaching sequentially, ensuring that each lesson builds on previous learning. You would have received a written report at the end of term 2 outlining where your child is regarding meeting curriculum expectations in Reading, Writing and Mathematics. If your child's progress has not met the expected curriculum standards, we would have communicated this to you. We believe that collaboration between home and school is crucial for your child’s success. Together, we can support them in developing essential literacy and mathematical skills. |
Have a wonderful joyful week. Thank you for all that you do for our school. Less than one month less of Winter as we head towards Spring.
I will leave you with the voice of some of our students
I like this school because of how many opportunities I get and also how everyone is kind and understanding.” Anaya
“ I like this school because the people here are nice and the teachers are very helpful and help when you get stuck.” Georgia
“ The reason why I love Sacred Heart Cathedral School is because it gives you several opportunities to do amazing activities such as camp and market day. We also have a great staff and get a good education along with many friendly students.” Javi
“I like Sacred Heart Cathedral School because I get to see my friends, play football, PE and learn maths.” Andre

Kia ora koutou.
Welcome to term 3!
Change in Board Members:
At the end of June, Andrew Reid resigned from the board. I would like to thank him for his contribution to the board and the school community over the past almost two years.
At our last meeting on 31 July, we welcomed David Aldred to fill the casual vacancy as a parent representative. David has children at SHCS in year 6 and year 8. We are very grateful that David put his name forward to be on the board and his generosity in sharing his skills with the board and school.
Board Meeting:
At our board meeting last week, we discussed:
-
The upcoming ERO review of SHCS.
-
The upcoming changes to the curriculum and how we can best support our Principal and teachers to implement them.
-
Our updated triennial review programme 2025-2027.
-
Feedback from the ASC survey.
-
The ASC assessment recently conducted by Te Kāhui Kāhu (an independent government business unit which provides social services accreditation).
At our next meeting, we will focus on finance and property, junior achievement and pastoral care.
If you have any questions about the above, please email or call me suzanneadair@hotmail.com , 021 039 7558.
Ngā mihi nui,

JUNIOR NETBALL REGISTRATION:
Registrations are open for Year 3 & 4 Junior Netball (Term 4).
Starts – Saturday, 19th October – Saturday, 7th December (last day). No game on Labour Weekend (26th October).
We will need a parent/parents volunteer to help on the day to make this work no experience needed!
This is an awesome intro into netball!
Year 3 & 4 Programme:
Year 3 & 4’s play a modified version of the game (5 v 5) over two thirds of a netball court using a size.
4 netball and 2.6 metre goals. A portable goal will be used at one end. Girls and boys can play.
Positions are 2 x Attacker, 2 x Defender, 1 x Centre, with the court split into halves. MK will provide all resources for the programme, including Junior Co-ordinators to lead the programme, and all equipment (including balls and bibs).
Each weekly session is 60 minutes long and incorporates both a skill development period and a game of approximately 4 x 6 minute quarters. There are five players from each team on the court. Teams may use rolling substitutions at any time during the game. A maximum of eight players per team is recommended. We prefer to register year 3 & 4 players within school teams. However, if there are not enough players from a single school to form appropriate sized teams, we are happy to accept registrations from individuals, and make up teams from these players each week.
No more than 16 teams can participate in any round. The amount of rounds will depend on the amount of entries. Confirmation of your round will be made as soon as possible after the closing date of entries.
Each team registration must be accompanied by at least one Year 3/4 Coach registration. On Game Day (Saturday), Coaches supervise a small group of children under the guidance of the Junior Co-ordinator (provided by MK). Coaches need to attend a Woolworths futureFERNS training course and be available on Game Day. There is no umpire, but a Junior Co-ordinator or Coach is allowed onto the court to assist and support players during the game.
If you have any questions or if you are interested, please email Lalita at netball@sacred-heart.school.nz.

1. Regular attendance at school helps build and maintain a child's learning and positive daily habits and routines, as well as promote their well-being by connecting them to their peers and learning new things.
2. We want our tamariki to thrive and be resilient and active members within their whānau and community.
3. Attendance matters and we can all work together to increase school attendance.
