Weekly Update From Bernadette

Bernadette photo.JPG

Kia ora koutou e te whānau,

We had a stunning pōwhiri to welcome new staff and families. Special thanks to Caleb Ware and his whānau who supported our staff and students and to Nik Solia for speaking on behalf of those who are new to Sacred Heart Cathedral School.

On Friday, we had a special "Welcome back to School Liturgy". Father Patrick blessed us all and we are all going to have a wonderful 2024.

Room 1 and 2 are learning about the history of Sacred Heart Cathedral School and impact of the Sisters of Mercy as we are a Mercy School.

As we came together to commemorate Waitangi Day, a pivotal occasion on the Māori calendar, we found ourselves reflecting on the essence of not only this significant day but also Te Tiriti itself. Waitangi Day has always held a special place in the hearts of Māori, providing a unique opportunity to show unity in partnership, amplify voices, and convey powerful messages. I am heartened to see Tangata Tiriti join with Tangata whenua.

One thing was very clear for me is that Waitangi Day serves as a platform for the realisation and enactment of a profound partnership between Tangata Whenua and Tangata Tiriti.

Waitangi Day is an invitation to deepen our understanding of te Tiriti o Waitangi through open dialogue and active listening.

The recent happenings at the Waitangi Treaty grounds serve as a reminder to all who call Aotearoa home. The importance of acknowledging our shared history and working collaboratively towards a future that reflects the values of collectivism, respect, and partnership. Let us continue to honour the spirit of Waitangi, Te Tiriti and strive for a more inclusive, understanding, and harmonious Aotearoa.

Have an amazing week. Please reach out to your child's class teacher if you have any questions.

Arohanui,
