Dear God,
You come to us in Jesus who teaches us that the way to happiness is through our love for one another.
Watch over the teachers, students and families of Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we try to be faithful to this teaching.
Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.
Weekly Update from Bernadette Murfitt
Kia ora koutou e te whānau,
Welcome back to term 2. I hope you have had a break and are energised for the term ahead.
A warm welcome to Xander, sho started at our school in Room 1 today. You are going to thoroughly enjoy your time at Sacred Heart Cathedral School and will make lifelong friends!
Our students will have a 2-week transition to wear their winter uniform. We have a lot of second-hand winter unforms if you would like to have a look or you could also check out NZ Uniforms, Thorndon.
We had a fabulous day on Monday going into a great deal of depth learning about the Refreshed Curriculum. https://youtu.be/gfpRap_s3AI
Every Thursday, we have full school Kapa Haka. We are so proud of the achievement of all of our students as they become very fluent with waiata.
It was certainly a little sobering to read the recently released Independent Police Conduct Authority report into the occupation at Parliament last February/March. Last year, I met with an investigator for over two hours outlining the impact of the occupation on our school and school community. Once again as I reflect, I am feeling super grateful to our amazing staff, Suzanne (our Presiding member), BOT members, students, community and Ministry of Education staff (Roy Sye and Anne Bell) together we developed systems and processes ensuring safety was always number one.

Each day, I start my day with working with a group of students we were brainstorming what we are all grateful for. I shared this beautiful Whakatauki which also seems so perfect as we remember those who did so much for us in the past.
Tuku aroha ki mua. Tuku aroaha ki muri. Kia tu te aroha o naianei.
Send love to the past. Send love to the future. Be love today.
Have a wonderful week. Please reach out to your child's classroom teacher if you are worried about any aspects of school. Together we can work out a solution.
Mrs Murfitt, Mrs Stephen, Mr and Mrs Woodbury on camels at Alice Springs! A new experience for all the participants!!

Sacred Heart Cathedral School
On Holy Thursday, we had a beautiful Liturgy outlining the last week of the life of Jesus. The Liturgy Leaders narrated, acted, and sang so our students could understand what the gift of faith is. They were absolutely stunning - thank you. The rest of the school was so focussed and the impact of the silence as every class headed back to their classrooms highlighted the why behind what Jesus did for us all.

School Gospel Value for the Next 4 Weeks
Our School Gospel Value for the next 4 weeks is aroha/love.
in the school community. To understand that although people are different
everybody deserves to be loved. To show love to animals, nature, people and
the environment. To love God even though you can’t see him. Realise that
God’s love is constant.
Years 6 – 8: Recognising their individuality and loving their unique qualities. To
understand that love is unconditional. To love God even though you can’t see

Junior Syndicate - ASB and Library Visits
Middle Syndicate - Hidden Māori Treasures Walking Tour
You are invited to the Mother's Day Liturgy at 11.30am on 12th May in St Mary's Hall. There will be parking available in the playground. You are welcome to stay for a cup of tea in the library afterwards.
Te Ahi Ora - 24th May and 25th May
We are thrilled to announce that Te Ahi Ora will be coming to Wellington this year!
Te Ahi Ora will deliver free performing arts lessons to our school, followed by free evening Fire Performances (24th May and 25th May) and lessons for our school community.
Fire Performance is an emerging community activity that is rapidly spreading across the country. This exciting discipline engages the mind, connects with the body, and is incredibly fun and stimulating.
The last few years have been rather difficult for schools, students, and families, and we aim to re-ignite the passion for learning and community in a fun and highly engaging setting.
Te Ahi Ora has 5 main goals:
- Encourage students to participate in physically challenging and satisfying activities.
- Boost self-confidence, encourage experimentation and foster creativity.
- Provide opportunities for personal growth and development.
- Build a sense of community through shared celebration and performance.
- Counter the negative effects of excessive screen time and digital addiction.
They specialise in putting on safe, educational, and incredibly engaging sessions for the communities they work with.

Change and loss are issues that affect all of us at some stage in our lives. At Sacred Heart Cathedral School, we recognise that when significant changes occur in our lives, young people may benefit from learning how to manage these changes effectively.
We are therefore offering a very successful education program called Seasons for Growth which will take place this Term. This program is facilitated in small groups and is based on research that highlights the importance of social support and the need to practice new skills to cope effectively with change and loss. The program focuses on issues such as self-esteem, managing feelings, problem-solving, decision-making, effective communication, and support networks.
If you think your son or daughter would benefit from Seasons for Growth, we would encourage you to talk to him/her about participating in the program.
If you would like to enrol your child or require further information, please contact John Grevatt - John@sacred-heart.school.nz.
Resilience Tips from Bernadette
Take active steps to stay well.
Listen to your body.
Try and keep physically active.
Drink plenty of water and enjoy the odd cup of tea.
Be grateful - try and notice and acknowledge the little things.
Interact with others.
I try and make sure that the energy levels I have in the morning when I arrive at school are the same as they are at the end of the day.
This is an initiative from our Kaitiaki Team, where they are encouraging students to bring their lunch on Tuesdays without gladwrap or any wrapping that needs to be thrown out. It would be great if our students got behind this and supported it.
Recycle Upcycle Silent Auction
If you have something at home that you no longer want and think that another family may find it useful, please send it to school and we will have a silent auction to raise money for resources for our school.
Please make sure that these items are in great condition (look brand new). You may have been given something you have never used or don't require. If you have a business and are happy to donate an item that would be amazing as well.
So far we have brand new make-up, perfume, and small items of furniture.
All donations can be left at school by Wednesday, 10th May.
Money raised will go towards our external environment.
Flick me an email or call if you are unsure of your donation - bernadette.murfitt@sacred-heart.school.nz.
If you would like to help me with the silent auction, please reach out. Thank you.
