Weekly Update from Bernadette Murfitt
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
What a week it has been!
It was so lovely to see so many Parents and Grandparents at our Liturgy last Thursday. The disco was a huge hit and our students were achieving well at Newtown Park at the Central and Inter Zone athletics.

The count down begins.....
Welcome to Marrick who has joined Room 1. We know you will have a wonderful time during the next eight years at Sacred Heart Cathedral School and will make lifelong friends.
The National Centre for Religious Studies has launched a Prayer App NZpray2day. This app encourages us all to take a moment to refelctand pray.
Special thanks for all your support with our Christmas Hamper raffle. If you require additional raffle books we have some available in the office.
Next Wednesday 25 November - Room 2 Parents are hosting Room 1 parents for afternoon tea.
Next Thursday 26 November is our thank you morning tea in our school library at 10.30. Try and pop in and have a Christmas treat with our staff.
Please all take care and look after yourselves.
Arohanui,
Bernadette Murfitt
Principal, Sacred Heart Cathedral School
Dear God,
You come to us in Jesus who teaches us that the way to happiness is through our love for one another.
Watch over the teachers, students and families of Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we try to be faithful to this teaching.
Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.
Central Zone & Inter Zone Athlethics
Athletics 2020
The weather has been so unpredictable lately, so competing in events like athletics has required patience, flexibility and perseverance! Twice the Central Zone event was postponed and when it did eventually happen, it was a mad scramble to organise transport, parent helpers and paperwork.
Firstly a big thank you to parents for signing and returning forms quickly! Thank you also for helping out with supervision or assisting with running the shot put events, and marshalling relay teams.
Students compete first in Central Zone Athletics. Then the top three athletes go on to compete at Inter-Zone athletics. This year we fielded our biggest Inter- Zone team ever - 28 students. This included three relay teams - Year 7 Boys, and Year 8 Girls and Boys. An amazing effort!
As always our students showed admirable sportsmanship and conducted themselves in the Sacred Heart way. We are so proud of the high standard of behaviour shown both while competing and before and after events. Official results will be out soon - the top three students from Inter-Zones will go on to compete at the Regional Athletics which this year will be held on 1st December at Newtown Park Stadium.

Dancing acheivement by two of our students
Ava B, Room 9, has achieved Distinction in her RAD and Contemporary Exams (for results received for 2 out of 3 exams so far). Ava has also been successful in retaining her place with the NZ School of Dance Classical Ballet Scholars training programme for 2021.
Ava also competed (by video) in the NZ Regional of the Asian Grand Prix (AGP) International Ballet competition and learned on Monday that she received silver medals for both her classical and contemporary solo’s. Ava is now an invited finalist in the AGP and a scholarship recipient. The finals are held in Hong Kong and include dancers from Australia, China, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Korea, Singapore and Japan. However due to COVID, the final will now be held by video. Attached is a picture of Ava performing her AGP classical solo variation “Crystal Fountain Fairy” from the ballet Sleeping Beauty.
The sun was out and we are grateful for all Grandparents who were able to join us last Thursday.
Special blessing from all of us at Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we honour our grandparents.
Once upon a time there was a child ready to be born.
The child asked God.
Child:
They tell me you are sending me to earth tomorrow, but how am I going to live there being so small and needy?
God:
Among the angels, I’ll choose one for you. Your angel will be waiting for you and take care of you.
Child:
But tell me, here in heaven I don’t have to do anything but sing, smile and be happy.
God:
Your angel will sing for you and will also smile for you every day. And you will feel your angel’s love and be very happy.
Child:
And how am I going to be able to understand when people talk to me if I don’t understand the language?
God:
Your angel will tell you the most beautiful and sweet words you will ever hear, and with much patience can care, your angel will teach you how to speak.
Child:
I’ve heard on earth there are bad people. Who will protect me?
God:
Your angel will defend you, even if it means risking its own life.
Child:
If I am to leave now, please tell me my angel’s name.
God:
Your angel’s name is not important. You will simply call your angel,
GRANDPA or GRANDMA.
REFLECTION
“When you thought I wasn’t looking.”
When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw you hang my first painting on the fridge.
And I immediately wanted to paint another one.
When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw you make my favourite cake for me.
And I learned the little things in life could be the special things in life.
When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw you take care of your house and everyone in it. And I learned that we have to take care of what we are given.
When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw tears come from your eyes. And I learned that sometimes things hurt, but it is alright to cry.
When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw how you handled responsibilities, even when you didn’t feel very well. And I learned that I would have to be responsible when I grow up.
When you thought I wasn’t looking I looked at you and wanted to say,
“Thanks for all the things I saw when you thought I wasn’t looking.”
