Weekly Update from Bernadette Murfitt
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
This week we celebrate Tokelauan Language Week | Te vaiaho o te gagana Tokelau!
A warm welcome to Sophia, who started at our school on Tuesday, 27 October in Room 1. We hope you will enjoy your time at our school and are sure you will make lifelong friends.
Our Year 7 and 8 students left for Camp Kaitoke. There were lots of excited faces and plenty of gear to ensure the camp will be home away from home. Special thanks to our teaching staff Christine, Jane and Ann who have planned this exciting outdooor experience for our children for the second time as we had to reschedule from earlier on in the year. Thank you also to our parent helpers who have all taken time out of their busy lives to support the staff over the next three days. We are looking forward to hearing all about the wonderful outdoor adventures you all have.

As we are in Alert Level 1 it is important that we continue to employ good hygiene, use the COVID app when out and about, stay home if we are sick or ring healthline if you have any concerns about your health.
Last Wednesday, Dion and Kymani helped out to keep our school clean and tidy for our new families who had visited our school for the Parent Orientation.
Have a great week and special thanks for the way you support our school.
Arohanui,
Bernadette Murfitt
Principal
Sacred Heart Cathedral School
Dear God,
You come to us in Jesus who teaches us that the way to happiness is through our love for one another.
Watch over the teachers, students and families of Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we try to be faithful to this teaching.
Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.
The Parish are closing off the access down the steps from our school playground to the driveway between the Cathedral and the Catholic Centre because of the Health & Safety requirements of the Cathedral Construction Site. This will be effective from tomorrow, Thursday, 29th October.
Tokelau Language Week/Te Vaiaho o te Gagana Tokelau
Malo ni!
In 2020, Tokelau Language Week is being held from Sunday, 25th October – Saturday, 31st October.
The 2020 Tokelau Language theme is ‘Apoapo tau foe, i nā tāfea i te galutau. Ke mau mai, ke mau mai’ which in English translates to, 'Never give up hope, even amidst chaos and much uncertainty. Stay united, stay strong'. This theme was influenced by 2020 events and how the COVID-19 outbreak has shaped a new normal for the Tokelau community and everyone worldwide.
About Tokelau Language Week

Tokelau is made up of three small coral atolls and is home to around 1500 people. There are more than 7000 Tokelau peoples living in New Zealand with over half of the country’s Tokelau community living in the Porirua and Hutt Valley areas of Wellington. There are also Tokelau communities in Auckland, Taupō, and Rotorua. Family, community, and language are the centre of Faka-Tokelau, the Tokelau way of life.
Tokelau Language Week provides the opportunity to introduce your students to the culture and language of Tokelau, helping to keep Gagana Tokelau alive in New Zealand. This special week helps all New Zealanders journey towards shared cultural understandings. Learning a new language gives us insight into new ways of thinking, and to different beliefs and cultural practices. Through this learning we acquire knowledge, skills, and attitudes that help us live in our culturally diverse world.

Students are to bring their school hat to school. If your child does not have a school hat, you can purchase one at school for $15.00 each or at NZ Uniforms - https://www.nzuniforms.com. A child who is not wearing a school hat will have to sit in the shade.
It is important that we are all sun smart. By wearing a school sunhat we are reducing exposure to UV radiation and the risk of skin cancer.
If you have any uniform items that your child no longer fits and are happy to donate to the school, please drop it off at the office. Thank you.
We have a student joining the school next year in Year 8 who would be very appreciative of any second hand size 12 uniform items, in particular a skirt.

Ho ho ho…santa’s here with more mufti and hamper cheer…
Yes, it’s that time again. Another Christmas rolls round and so it goes, our 2020 Christmas season mufti day (Friday, 6th November) is upon us and with it our annual call out for Christmas hamper contributions.
On mufti day (next Friday), we’ll ask all students to bring an item towards a hamper, which will be 'raffled' off. Best of all, you’ll all get an opportunity to win one of these fantastic hampers.
We’ll send home to each family a small book of five raffle tickets with each ticket worth $2. You can sell them to friends, family or you might choose to up your odds on winning one of these goodies by buying the lot. We ask that each family sends the money and ticket butts back to school by Friday, 27th November. Also, please include any unsold tickets in your returned envelope. We’ll draw the winning ticket the following week, announcing winners on Wednesday, 2nd December.
Keeping it simple, we have chosen themes for each year for our hampers and have provided you with a few ideas to begin with below. We ask that all contributions be non-perishable and something you think you’d love to see in a hamper if you won.

STARRING GAVIN RUTHERFORD as Dame Rosie Bubble
A new pair of shoes really can change your life!
From the writers of last year’s acclaimed Pantomime, Alice in Wonderland, comes their brand new
look at the much loved, magical fairy tale of Cinderella. Simon Leary and Gavin Rutherford
have collaborated to bring you yet another fabulous family show. It’s jammed packed with singing,
dancing, up-to-the minute jokes for the adults, and a sizeable dose of magic and slapstick for the kids.
Cinderella lives on Mt Victoria and nearby are her rich, evil and unkind step siblings. Things are
rough - but with Cinderella's can-do attitude, an encounter with someone who may turn out to
be a Prince, and a fairy godmother with magical powers, could things possibly end happily?
