Weekly Update from Bernadette Murfitt
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
“Me mahi tahi tātou mo te oranga o te katoa – we must work together for the wellbeing of all.”
Our world may be changing again - from what we thought was our new norm to one of further uncertainty - yet here we are presumably having learnt lessons from a couple of months ago and we are better prepared this time. We know what worked and we know what we need to do better.
It is pleasing to see how New Zealanders are responding to this latest outbreak by getting tested if unwell, and staying home.
While most of us are familiar with requirements at Alert Level 2, we will continue to emphasise the importance of:
- Good hand hygiene and cough and sneeze etiquette.
- Staying away if sick.
- Keeping the appropriate physical distance from others.
- Cleaning and disinfecting our high touch surfaces daily.
- Displaying QR code posters at our entrances and encouraging all of our community to download the NZ COVID Tracer App and use it if they come on-site.
- Keeping a visitor register for anyone who cannot use the app and for other essential visitors.
We know all these things will help to keep our community as safe as possible.
Students are not required to wear face masks at Alert Level 2, however they may wear them to school. We are following this advice from the Ministry of Health https://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/diseases-and-conditions/covid-19-novel-coronavirus/covid-19-health-advice-general-public/covid-19-use-masks-community/covid-19-how-use-face-mask-safely.
Please don’t underestimate the toll that the COVID experience this year has had on us all. We all weathered this extraordinary experience over many months, staying positive, being kind and getting through. We have now been thrown back to level two, with the uncertainty of how this will play out over the coming days, weeks and months. We are ‘COVID-weary,’ outwardly putting on the energetic, brave face in front of our families, colleagues and friends. Underneath, we are weary, and a certain amount of anxiety is bubbling beneath the surface. Digging deep is harder than it was. So again, be kind to yourself and be aware we are all feeling this in our own way. Humans are fragile and a little tender loving care goes a long way right now. If I can do anything to help, please get in touch with me.
Please take care of yourselves. We are hunkering down here at school. We are all ready if we need to move alert levels. Thanks to you all for scanning the QR code or signing in at the office as contact tracing is a crucial part to stamping out this virus.
If you have any paper bags with handles left over from My Food Bag - we can use them at school. Please drop them into the office.
Next week, I am on jury service for the week. Mrs. Christine Geraghty will be Acting Principal in my absence.
Arohanui,
Bernadette Murfitt

The Mahi of the Compassion Soup Kitchen
At the Compassion Soup Kitchen we support people in need to live with dignity in the community. When the return to alert level 2 was announced on 12 August, the Soup Kitchen immediately returned to serving substantial takeaway meals once a day. During the March-June COVID-19 crisis, the Soup Kitchen operated as an essential service and served over 12,000 meals. Between July 2019 and mid-March 2020, the Compassion Soup Kitchen served 23,000 meals healthy meals to vulnerable Wellingtonians. A garden, fishing trips, sewing, and a writing group are some of the ways we help to connect people.
Thank you for your support,
