Weekly Update from Bernadette Murfitt
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Please see attachment regarding Alert Level 2 requirements at Sacred Heart Cathedral School as of Midday, Wednesday, 12 August 2020.
Feel free to contact me should you require clarification.
We have all been here before and know what to do. Let's stay calm and make this transition as smooth as possible.
As advised by the Ministry Of Education and Ministry Of Health we will be aiming to minimise the number of adults who come on our school site. Any adults who do come onto our school site will need to contact trace either by app or using our contacts tracing register in the office. We ask that you take the time to read and understand the information below so there is no confusion.
As per our new normal we will continue to enforce key public health measures of good handwashing protocol, staying home if sick and employing a cough etiquette that keeps us all safe.
The following is information I recieved from Iona Holsted - Secretary for Education
All of New Zealand excluding Auckland region
Alert Level 2 applies from midday today.
- At Alert Level 2 it is safe for all students, children and staff to attend school and early learning. There will be appropriate precautions in place.
- Children and staff who are at higher-risk of severe illness are encouraged to take additional precautions when leaving home.
- Please be alert to illness and ask anyone who is presenting as unwell to go home, or ask parents and caregivers to come and pick the child up.
- Messaging about good hand hygiene and cough and sneeze etiquette to be reinforced.
- Soap and water is very appropriate for washing hands, particularly if hand sanitiser stocks are low.
- For schools, children, young people and staff should be far enough away from each other so that they are not breathing on or touching each other, coupled with good hygiene practices and regular cleaning of commonly touched surfaces. There does not need to be a specific measurement but where practicable and reasonable 1 metre can be used as a guide, particularly between adults.
- Physical distancing of 2 metres is recommended for parents and caregivers, from people they don’t know (to align with public health measures outside the school grounds).
Please go to our guidance on our website for further details.
Masks
Masks are not required at schools and early learning services at Alert levels 2 and 3.

On reflection, I can say you don't get a better job than being the Principal at Sacred Heart Cathedral School.
A couple of experiences last week:
Going with Mrs Geraghty to the National Library to hear our Prime Minister and Minister Martin speak about the importance of Reading as a means of wellbeing.
To quote my mother "Bernadette, you always have a friend when you have a good book."
Sharing talent with residents from the Vincentian Home and people who participate in the Chelsea Group activities. Special thanks to Miss Regan and all the children who brought joy to our audience over at the Home of Compassion.
Singing with St. Mary's College for Cardinal John as he blessed the workers who are strengthening the Cathedral.
On all three occasions, I felt really proud as our children representing our school to the very highest level.
Last week, I also recieved a grant to purchase 6 new iPads and 6 new chromebooks for our school. These have been ordered and we are waiting to dispatch them into classrooms. I am also in the process of replacing a few student devices across the school a little bit of wear and tear after 4 years. Your generous donations allow us to keep our technology up to date - thank you.
Kia mahara koe ki a koe ano.
Arohanui,
Bernadette Murfitt
Principal
Sacred Heart Cathedral School
Dear God,
You come to us in Jesus who teaches us that the way to happiness is through our love for one another.
Watch over the teachers, students and families of Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we try to be faithful to this teaching.
Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.
The combined St Marys and Sacred Heart Cathedral School choir.
Congratulations to the following students who received Gold certificates:
Gymnastics Class at Wellington Girls' College
The Middle Syndicate are loving their gymnastic lessons at Wellington Girls' College. Take a look at Room 6 and their gymnastics tutors making a giant pyramid.
On Thursday, 6 August, Miss Regan and Mrs Murfitt accompanied a group of students on a visit to the Home of Compassion.
"Thank you so much for joining us at the gathering today. We always love to be entertained by you and appreciate you sharing your talents with us. Thank you for putting a smile on our faces and bringing joy to our day." Packiam and the Home of Compassion.

We have a number of uniform items and this school bag and matching lunchbox has been in the lost property box for some time now. If the bag belongs to your child, please ask her/him to bring it home.

We have a new lost property chest - an engagement gift from Bernadette's mum and dad from many moons ago!
