Weekly Update from Bernadette Murfitt
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
We had a beautiful day on Friday celebrating the Feast of the Sacred Heart. Thank you to all families who were able to join us for the liturgy on zoom. Father David, Miss Regan and our student leaders did a superb job reminding us all how important it is to show love and care towards others.
Please ensure your child has a black jacket and wears it to keep warm and dry. We keep getting caught out with the changes in temperature.
There is an enormous amount of lost property most of it is unnamed uniform and jackets. If your child has misplaced an item, please get them to have a look in the lost property box.
Special thanks to Amanda and Alwyn D'Souza who have supported the Senior Syndicate teachers in the delivery of the "Changes at Puberty " health unit. Their professional wisdom and experiences as parents is a real gift to our school community.
This week in our school prayers via zoom, we reflected on a beautiful resource from Caritas for World Refugee Day which was on Sunday.
This Friday, a progress report will be coming home that gives a snapshot of learning this first half of the year. You are most welcome to book a follow up interview in week 2 of term 3. I am trying to pace ourselves at the moment as I know many parents are returning back to the office and it has been a long term for everyone.
Just a reminder our term finishes on Thursday, 2 July. On Friday, 3 July staff will be onsite learning about a schoolwide assessment tool called Progress and Consistency Tool.
Have a great week, keep warm and keep well.
I will leave the final word to Cooper in Room 5.
Arohanui,
Bernadette Murfitt
Principal
Sacred Heart Cathedral School
Dear God,
You come to us in Jesus who teaches us that the way to happiness is through our love for one another.
Watch over the teachers, students and families of Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we try to be faithful to this teaching.
Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.
School Cross Country - Tomorrow (25 June)
Weather permitting, we will try and run the Cross Country tomorrow at 11.00am.
This will be for students in Years 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8.
Our training programme has been a little different this year - we are so proud of the way our children have committed to improving their own personal fitness.
Parent-Teacher Interviews - Reporting on Student Achievement
Written reports will go home on Friday, 26th June.
Parent-Teacher Interviews will happen in Week 2 of Term 3, 27 July (Monday) at 3pm - 7pm and 30 July (Thursday) at 3pm -5pm.
Please book a time to meet your child's teacher through School Interviews, go to

Fancy Feet Day on Tuesday (30th June)
We had to move our "Moving March Fancy Feet Day" to June. On Tuesday (30th June), students can wear fancy feet but will need to wear their school uniform. The rationale behind this initiative is to get our children moving physically. The more colourful the footwear the better. The Wellington City Council are looking forward to seeing our photographs.
Matariki Sharing on Wednesday (1st July) at 1.30-2.30pm
Our classrooms will be open for you to have a look at what we have been learning on 1st July. Afternoon tea will be available in the staffroom for our families who are joining us. We are looking forward to seeing you next Wednesday afternoon.
Respecting Mother Earth
“Me aro ki te ha o papatuanuku”
Matariki is a time to prepare the whenua on which we live. In the middle of winter during Matariki, the land is in its most inactive phase. Certain vegetables are planted to appease the land based gods Rongo, Uenuku and Whiro. With spring on its way, Matariki is the perfect time to make plans for the land and for the new spring garden.

Chanelle in Room 5 has lost her jersey, it is named - either C Lai or J Lai. It is also a lighter shade of green than the usual colour. Please check your child's jersey and if found, please return to Chanelle in Room 5. Thank you.
Parish Food Bank - Mufti Day on Thursday (2nd July)
We would like to make a donation to the Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish food bank as part of our Matariki celebrations. We want to give offerings of food to those who may need it. We thought we would focus on items for breakfast the most important meal of the day. Our students will decorate paperbags for the items to be put in.
We are holding a mufti day on Thursday, 2nd July - if children could bring along a breakfast item instead of a gold coin, this would be much appreciated.
We will take the donated food items over to Father David on the Thursday 2nd July.
Social Media
All social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter and YouTube have a minimum age limit of 13+. While we recommend that young people are not on social media before they are ready, we also know that there is often pressure for them to become active in these spaces earlier. If they are interacting in these spaces before they are 13, its always better that they’re open and honest with you about using an app or site, rather than doing it behind your back. This way, you can help them make safe and responsible choices online.
Here are Netsafe’s top tips for setting up social media accounts for your child:
- Teach the online safety basics:
Make sure you’ve taught them the skills they need to make safe choices online. This includes how to set up a strong password, what information they need to protect online, what is appropriate online behaviour and what they should do if they need help or if something makes them uncomfortable or upset.
- Help with the set up:
If possible, set up the account together, using your email account and their actual age. This will help to limit the inappropriate content they see. Pay particular attention to the privacy settings when signing up and put aside time to when you can both explore the settings and functionality of the platform together.
- Set boundaries and expectations:
Sit together and come up with expectations around behaviour, screentime, privacy, who they will connect with and what can be shared. Let them know that you will be a ‘friend’ or you will ‘follow’ them – it is important to be transparent about this and ensure this expectation is in place from the beginning. Make sure you help them to have a plan in place should something not go as expected. What should they do if something happens online that makes them feel uncomfortable?
- Check-in:
Research shows that parents are critical to the success of young people becoming safe, confident and capable in their use of digital technology. Regular proactive conversations at home helps to minimise the damage if things do go wrong online. It’s important to let your child know that they can talk to you about anything that happens to them online and that you’ll be there to support them no matter what.
- Teach them about the safety tools available – most social networks include tools to block, report or remove harmful content. Make sure they know how to use these to keep themselves safe.
