Weekly Update from Bernadette Murfitt
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
I am so proud of our students and staff. They all embraced the expectations at all Alert Levels. Our transition back to school superceded my expectations. The children are very calm and are thoroughly enjoying being with each other. Now we are at Alert Level 1 we will continue to be vigilant around hand washing, keeping our surfaces clean, practising sneeze and cough etiquette plus staying home if you are sick. Our Prime Minister has also asked we keep track of where we have been. We have QR code tracking posters around the school for you to use. I am starting to reschedule events in our school calendar and will highlight these to you once they have been confirmed.
We start our school week with school wide prayers. This is led by our student Liturgy Leaders through zoom. This term we are focussing on peacefulness.
Lord Jesus, we ask you to give us all around peace in our mind, body, soul and spirit. We want you to heal and remove everything that is causing stress, grief, and sorrow in our lives. Please guide our path through life and help us all to be at peace with others.
Independence Day for the Philippines, 12 June commemorating the declaration of Philippine independence from Spain in 1898. The proclamation was made in Cavite at the ancestral home of General Emilio Aguinaldo. The event saw the unfurling of the Flag of the Philippines, made in Hong Kong by Marcela Agoncillo, Lorenza Agoncillo, and Delfina Herboza, and the performance of the Marcha Filipina Magdalo, as the national anthem now known as Lupang Hinirang, which was composed by Julián Felipe and played by the San Francisco de Malabon marching band.
Student voice:
"My Grandad lives in the Philippines. I went to visit him for New Year last year." Rohan (Rm 7)
"My Mum and Dad were both born in the Philippines." Joshua (Rm 6)
We should be proud of our efforts to date by us all to keep each other safe. What a great feeling it is to be at Alert Level 1.
Have a great week.
Arohanui,
Bernadette Murfitt
Principal
Sacred Heart Cathedral School
Dear God,
You come to us in Jesus who teaches us that the way to happiness is through our love for one another.
Watch over the teachers, students and families of Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we try to be faithful to this teaching.
Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.
Alert Level 1 for schools (information provided by the Ministry of Education):
- Physical distancing is not a requirement but where possible or practicable is encouraged when you are around people you don’t know.
- There are no specific public health requirements.
- There are no restrictions on personal movement so all students, children and staff continue to be safe to go to school / early learning, and all students must attend school.
- We will continue with the usual practice of having a visitor and an attendance register (and will need to work with local health authorities to identify close contacts should there be a case connected with the school).
- There are no restrictions on numbers at gatherings or on physical activities including cultural and sporting activities, practices and events.
The Golden Rules for everyone at Alert Level 1:
- If you’re sick, stay home. Don’t go to work or school. Don’t socialise.
- If you have cold or flu symptoms call your doctor or Healthline and make sure you get tested.
- Wash your hands. Wash your hands. Wash your hands.
- Sneeze and cough into your elbow, and regularly disinfect shared surfaces.
- If you are told by health authorities to self-isolate you must do so immediately.
- If you’re concerned about your wellbeing, or have underlying health conditions, work with your GP to understand how best to stay healthy.
- Keep track of where you’ve been and who you’ve seen to help contact tracing if needed. Use the NZ COVID Tracer app as a handy way of doing this.
- Businesses should help people keep track of their movements by displaying the Ministry of Health QR Code for contact tracing.
- Stay vigilant. There is still a global pandemic going on. People and businesses should be prepared to act fast to step up Alert Levels if we have to.
- People will have had different experiences over the last couple of months. Whatever you’re feeling — it’s okay. Be kind to others. Be kind to yourself.

Our school feast day will be a little different this year.
We will start our day at 9AM with a Liturgy you are most welcome to join us. A zoom link will be sent out soon.
Then we will start artwork for Matariki followed by games and activities in the afternoon.
The children will also recieve an ice block treat.
This feast day represents Jesus Christ's actual heart as love for all humanity.
Fancy Feet Day on Tuesday (30th June)
We had to move our "Moving March Fancy Feet Day" to June. On Tuesday (30th June), students can wear fancy feet but will need to wear their school uniform. The rationale behind this initiative is to get our children moving physically. The more colourful the footwear the better. The Wellington City Council are looking forward to seeing our photographs.
