Weekly update from Bernadette Murfitt
As a staff we are delighted with the smooth start to the 2019 school year.
A very special welcome to Yirong our 2019 Mandarin Langauage Assistant. We share Yirong with Thorndon School. Yirong will be with us on a Thursday and Friday and will teach our students Mandarin and aspects of Chinese culture.
Last Monday evening the teaching staff went over to the Home of Compassion in Island Bay to view the wonderful spiritual experiences available to both students and adults at the Heritage Centre. We learnt about Suzanne’s ongoing legacy through the work of the Sisters of Compassion as they live her vision today.
Special thanks to Deirdre Hanlon who facilitated our visit. A highlight for us all was to visit the chapel and resting place of Suzanne Aubert in beautiful surroundings.

Wishing you a fantastic week

Paid Union Meeting has been postponed
This meeting has been postponed.
Please be advised that the NZEI have postponed the upcoming paid union meeting for the teachers this Thursday 21 March.
We are still looking for the parent who made a payment of $25.00 on 11 February, with the reference 'CO-OPERATIVE BANK' - if this is you, please let Cathy know either by phone 04 4724047 or email cathy@sacred-heart.school.nz Thank you.
Monday, 11 March at 3:00-4:50pm & 5:50-6:30pm.
Wednesday, 13 March at 3:00-3:50pm 4:10-5:00pm.
Thanks very much to all the parents who have already booked in a 10 minute session to meet with your child's teacher. Sessions are filling up fast so please go online and book a time if you haven't already done so.
Click on the 'Make a Booking' button and enter the event code uu5p7. Bookings are open now.
On the 15th of February, we held a Powhiri to welcome Father Doug. This is the school's way of welcoming new people into the Sacred Heart community. We used the St. Mary's hall as the Marae, students for the Karanga and the teachers and students both did speeches. I think holding Powhiris is a very valuable part of the school and adds to the culture and community. It honours our country's history and makes new people feel welcome. We are all excited to work with Father Doug and have him as our Parish Priest.
Winter uniform orders due THIS Friday 8 March
ORDERS NEED TO BE IN BY THIS FRIDAY 8 MARCH – the suppliers need a decent lead in time in order to be able to deliver the orders to us in time for Term 2. Robyn does not hold many uniform items in stock so please complete an order form if your child requires any items. Thank you.
A quick update on costs for After School Care. For regular users, it costs $55.00 per child, per week. Early (by 3:30pm) pick ups for regular users $30.00 per child per week. Please note that Robyn, our After School Care supervisor does run a discount system for families with more than one child, who regularly attend. Casual attendance $15.00 per child per session. For casual attendance, please email Robyn: robynjones1952@gmail.com and cathy@sacred-heart.school.nz
This ensures that the school is aware of afterschool care arrangements on a casual basis.
Please note this is Robyn's new email address. Thank you.
The Year 3-6 Girls Only Futsal Festival at ASB Centre Kilbirnie on February 15th! We had an absolute blast, and I know the kids enjoyed themselves as well.
Sky Sports came down and filmed over the course of the day. For those that are interested, this will air on the Kiwi Football Show this Wednesday February 27th at 7:30pm.
“It was fun, I really enjoyed it! It was a great experience, “Victoria Room 7
‘”It’s a good thing to do because boys say that they are better at Soccer and the tournament showed us that girls can play too”, Maia Room 6
2019 Children's Sacramental Programme Confirmed timetable
Thank you all for your immesurable patience as we have been trying to work through this year’s timetable. This is now confirmed, bar confirmation of exactly where the Cathedral/SMA children’s catechism will take place. This I will confirm asap, but will either be in Connolly Hall or at Sacred Heart Primary School.
Please can everyone take note of all the dates and times as most have changed at some point as we have gone through several versions.
Thank you again for your patience and for all that you do to support this programme.
Every blessing in Christ,

Special thanks to Jess who worked with our staff last Thursday showing different ways to connect with ourselves and our students.
https://www.evelynlim.com/101-affirmations-for-children/
Here are a few affirmations that Jess shared with us:
We had a wonderful morning of singing with Michael Mangan at St Pauls Cathedral. This brilliant concert introduced our children to a varitety of liturgical songs that we plan to share with you throughout the year in our own school liturgies.
Michael's concerts
- Inspire children & teachers to participate enthusiastically
- Help students focus on the themes & liturgical seasons behind the songs
- Introduce & help teach new repertoire quickly
- Are highly interactive & fun!!

Last Friday evening our Senior students enjoyed splashing about in Thorndon Pool. This was a great opportunity for families to socialise together and get to know eachother. Special thanks to Suzanne who co ordinated the evening and to Matthew who cooked sausages for us all.

Congratulations to the following students for gaining a place in this year's Student Council: Amanda Rm 10, Noah Rm 8, Remy Rm 8, Fatimai Rm 10, Annabelle Rm 8, Ella Rm 9, Cara Rm 8, Marcus Rm 9, Eva Rm 10 and Julianne Rm 10.
Thank you to the twenty students who stood. It is great to have so many offering to lead in the syndicate. The winners are voted on by their peers and the staff. We look forward to your ideas and efforts this year!
Special thanks to Room 6 who have created a stunning display as you enter our library on " Unity"
A beautiful prayer was read by Daniel M:
Dear God,
We need to care for ourselves, our family and friends.
We need to work harder at accepting people that are different from us.
We are better people when we work together as a team and learn to accept and love each other's differences.
We do this and we are practising UNITY.
Amen
Marrzipan Drama at Sacred Heart Cathedral School
Good news! It’s not too late to join Marrzipan! We are looking for some awesome students to fill some parts in our play, which we will be performing for parents and their peers at the end of term. Marrzipan is a New Zealand renowned self-confidence programme aimed at bringing out the absolute best in students. Come along to a Trial Lesson and see whether you like it! You can sign up for one directly via our website www.marrzipandrama.co.nz (we have contact numbers on there too, should you prefer to talk to a human!)
This initiative is one that encourages us all to get more active during the month of March.
To celebrate this we thought we would have a fancy feet day on Tuesday 12 March where students can wear dress up their feet.

Marist St Pats Junior Rugby has built one of Wellington's proudest and most successful sports clubs.
