Weekly Update from Bernadette Murfitt
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Kia ora koutou katoa
Ngā mihi o te tau hau! I hope you all managed to enjoy some time with friends and whānau over the break.
Our staff have been preparing exciting learning opportunities for our students to begin this new decade. I am very appreciative of their dedication ensuring our students have authentic learning experiences within a stimulating classroom environment.

As a nation we all have concerns about the possibility of Coronavirus on our doorstep. We all look forward to its containment and eradication. In the meantime, we’ll strive to keep you updated through communication form the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health.
This Thursday marks 180 years since the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. There is a special Mass at St Mary's of the Angels at 9 am on Waitangi Day. As Waitangi day commemorations draw closer, it is an ideal time to reflect on what this day may mean to us. For me, personally it is an ideal opportunity to bring important issues such as culture, identity, and language to the forefront.
At Sacred Heart Cathedral School we have high expectations for all of our students. Together we can support all of our learners to achieve in all areas of school life. We appreciate feedback to ensure our school continues to improve the delivery of the New Zealand Curriculum.
We have quite a few different events coming up over the next few weeks. This is a great opportunity to join us and get to know members of our school community.
Curriculum Information Sessions on 10th February:
- Juniors 3-3.30pm
- Middles 3.40-4.20pm
- Seniors including camp information 4.20-5.20pm.
Beach Day at Oriental Bay is on 20th of February.
Year 7 and 8 will have a Pool Party at Thorndon Pool on 21st February at 5pm.
Powhiri to welcome new students and families on 24th February at 1pm.
Wheels Night on 28th February at 5pm. Please bring a fish and chip dinner.
For the first part of the school year, we are unable to use St. Mary's College Hall for assemblies and Liturgies as it is being used as a classroom while building renovations are carrried out. Many of our events this year will be weather dependent as we try and find a safe building that is relatively close to school.
I look forward to supporting you all throughout the year.
Arohanui,
Bernadette Murfitt
Principal
Sacred Heart Cathedral School
We are updating our records. Please return your emergency/permission form and cyber safety form so we can check our information is correct.
Dear God,
You come to us in Jesus who teaches us that the way to happiness is through our love for one another.
Watch over the teachers, students and families of Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we try to be faithful to this teaching.
Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.

TUTOR READING: CAN YOU HELP?
- Are you free to listen to or read with a child aged between 5-12 years?
- Sacred Heart Cathedral School needs people who are available to support children with reading. Parents, grandparents, family members and those of you who enjoy being around children are all welcome.
Tutor Reading entails spending 15-30 minutes with a child, listening to them read, reading books to them and discussing the story and its meaning or unknown vocabulary with them.
Tutors choose a day/s and times that are convenient for them.
The class teacher selects books and a focus for questioning or a skill to practise is recorded in a booklet for the tutor to follow. A short training session will be given by the class teacher on the first day of tutoring.
If you are interested, please email me at elinor@sacred-heart.school.nz with your contact number/s and preferred day and time.
Regards,
Elinor Scarlett

Subway Ordering Option Every Wednesdays
Safer Internet Day 2020 on 11th February
2. Do an online profile check-up. Familiarise yourself with the privacy settings on the social media platforms you use and remember, your digital footprint doesn’t wash away with the next tide so think twice about what you post.
3. Put your critical thinking cap on and get media savvy. Like everything online, the news we consume also deserves a critical lens. Implement a fake news ‘filter’ when you’re catching up on news online. Ask yourself: Is this a reliable source? Are these facts credible? Is the article balanced? Could this be a joke or a hoax?
4. Report bullying, abuse and harassment to Netsafe. Make sure you’re practising tolerance, kindness and respect online, and report bullying or abusive behaviours when you see it. There is legislation in New Zealand to help people experiencing something harmful online and Netsafe can help.
5. Most importantly, let’s kōrero about our experiences online. This is particularly important for our tamariki. Having regular, non-judgemental conversations with your kids about what they’re doing online helps to reduce the damage if things do go wrong.
The lower playground is now finished. The Archdiocese have strengthened a retaining wall on the boundary so it meant that we were able to complete the turf. We were fortunate to have recieved a grant from One Foundation that enabled us to put in extra playground equipment and turf. The children are enjoying the outside musical instruments. Special thanks to Parents and Friends who have been the driving force behind our fundraisers for the past four years. We have achieved so much as a school community and we are grateful to you all.

As you will have seen in the media the situation is rapidly evolving internationally concerning the coronavirus.
This is a new virus and its specific nature is currently unclear, however it appears that you can have the virus at an early stage and not be showing any symptoms. This incubation period is currently considered to be up to 14 days.
The health of students and staff is a priority for all. We will continue to encourage all of our school community to employ good hygiene practices including: frequent and thorough handwashing, cough etiquette and staying away from school if unwell.
The Ministry of Health has information to support us all.

We are currently monitoring all information from the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education. At this stage there is no specific action for us to take but will update you if the situation changes.
