Weekly Update from Bernadette Murfitt
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
I hope everyone is fully rested and recharged for our final term of 2020. It is a short term and will fly. Staff have planned a range of exciting learning activities for the next nine weeks.
The winter netball season is over and I really want to acknowledge the amazing group of parents who coach, manage, put rosters together, take trainings, cook sausages , attend meetings , sort uniform, organise referees, sort gear bags, updating parents through email, attend MK meetings, create certificates, organise the break up..... Sacred Heart Cathedral School relies on the team
appraoch to run our Saturday morning netball. What a great team of parents we have been blessed with. Our students are so lucky to have such a dedicated group of parents. My sincere thanks to you all and all that you do for our school. This is an example of stewardship in action.
Arohanui,
Bernadette Murfitt
Principal, Sacred Heart Cathedral School
A Reflection from Father James
Years ago, while involved with youth groups, I came across a book helpful both to young and older. It was put together around a quote from “an anonymous desert monk”:
Don’t lurk like a lizard beneath a rock. Stand up. Bathe your face in the sun. And reflect it on your brothers and sisters.
While the book expanded in many practical ways, the quote itself is sufficient challenge for anyone. Initially, I made efforts to live it, but quickly found the strong magnetic pull of the temptation “to lurk”. It is much easier to sit back, to tell myself that I don’t have the skill or couldn’t possibly do the task as well as someone else.
Then I realised that the desert monk is not challenging me to DO but to BE. Jesus came to tell us that, in the eyes of God, we are loveable – even though we sometimes get it wrong. Knowing that, “lurking” is not an option. I will stand and be seen. My hope, my joy, my generosity will make a huge difference to how I see others and how others see me.
Dear God,
You come to us in Jesus who teaches us that the way to happiness is through our love for one another.
Watch over the teachers, students and families of Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we try to be faithful to this teaching.
Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.
Congratulations to the following students:
Tammy Room 6, who has won an ICAS medal for achieving the highest score in the Year 5 ICAS Science exam. This is an incredible achievement and is testament to all her work ethic and positive attitude towards learning.
Keiffer Room 7, who has been successful in his application for a Gifted Learners Award, from the Ministry of Education. Keiffer will receive a share of the $1,000.00 award which he is intending to use to enrol himself in a Stem Club called Make Room Wellington – an education program designed around Engineering, Maths and Science.

We will have an information session at the beginning of the 2020 school year. We are applying for grants and will have a final price before school ends this year.
Our students participated in a wide range of activities to celebrate Chinese Language Week. Special thanks to Yirong who organised the Mandarin Language Assistants to come and help out with our different activities.

Curtis Cup Hockey U13 Tournament
In the second week of the holidays Jack Room 10, travelled to Napier to represent Wellington Hockey in the Curtis Cup U13 tournament. Part of the Wellington Futures B team, Jack and his team mates put up a good fight, playing 7 tough matches over 4 days. The team achieved a lot, including being the only team to score against the eventual winners Wellington A. With 2 hard fought wins, a draw, and a couple of close losses they ended the tournament to finish a very creditable 6th (out of 10). Well done Jack!
