Weekly Update from Bernadette Murfitt
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Te Wiki o te Reo Māori
Māori Language week has been celebrated each year since 1975.
Māori Language Day is September 14 and commemorates the presentation of the 1972 Māori language petition to parliament.
Te Wiki o te Reo Māori is becoming a major fixture on our national calendar, providing an opportunity for concentrated promotion, raising awareness and generating lots of interest and positive change for te reo Māori across Aotearoa.
The theme for 2019 is ‘Kia kaha te reo Māori’. ‘Kia kaha’ is well understood in New Zealand, meaning ‘be strong’. We often talk about languages as if they are people using words like wellbeing, language health, strength and revitalisation. When we say ‘Kia kaha te reo Māori,’ we’re saying ‘Let’s make the Māori language strong.’
We had a special mihi whakatau on Monday to welcome Jackson and his family to our school community.
We would appreciate you sending through or dropping off a copy of your child's immunisation certificate if you haven't already done so. If we don't have a copy of the certificate you would have received an email earlier on in the week. Thanking you in advance for this.

On Friday, we are going over to St. Mary's College for a sausage sizzle. The children will be asking for a sausage in Te Reo.
Special welcome to Milford who has joined Room 1. Welcome to Sacred Heart Cathedral School Milford - you will have a wonderful time of learning and will make life long friends.
Special thanks for all that you do to support our school.
Arohanui,
Bernadette Murfitt
Principal, Sacred Heart Cathedral School
Please find attached a letter from Regional Public Health.
If you havn't already done so please send your child's immunisation record to cathy@sacred-heart.school.nz
A Reflection from Father James
The opening of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights reads: “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.”
It’s good to be reminded of this tremendous endorsement of the human person and consider how we apply it to ourselves and to others. “Free and equal” stands out for me. It’s easy to take these rights for granted and lose sight of the fact that, for many people on this planet we call home, they are either denied or totally ignored.
This year there have been celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of a human stepping onto the Moon’s surface. At that time, seeing Earth from outer space, astronauts commented that Earth looked beautiful and vulnerable, but also united. “There are no boundaries, no borders,” one said. Back on Earth things look different. Respecting the freedom and equality of each person you meet each day will surely help towards a stronger and visible unity.
A visit from Minister Grant Robertson
Thomas B, Rm 9, presented some amazing ideas to Minister Grant Robertson on what could be possible for the Capital City of New Zealand. Well done Thomas! We are all so proud of you! You really are a politician in the making and gave us a lot of food for thought.
Click on the video to see Thomas in action.

Dear God,
You come to us in Jesus who teaches us that the way to happiness is through our love for one another.
Watch over the teachers, students and families of Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we try to be faithful to this teaching.
Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.

Sacred Heart Cathedral Boys' Choir Perform in Carmina Burana
On Saturday night, 7 September 2019, Sacred Heart Cathedral Boys' Choir under the direction of Michael Fletcher, performed as part of Carmina Burana, at the Michael Fowler Centre. The boys Aaryn Rm 6, Keiffer Rm 7, Xavier Rm 3, Yasha Rm 6, Leon Rm 3 and Yoshi Rm 2, sang the parts for cupids, although at least one of the boys was convinced until the day of the performance that they were meant to sing as 'cute pigs!'

Impressions of Sacred Heart Cathedral School
Check out the wonderful writing about what our school offers:
Why is Sacred Heart is so Special?
A lot of schools have amazing activities that everyone can learn from, for example physical education (P.E), you can learn how to communicate with other children or you can learn how to use your team (using teamwork). But, Sacred Heart Cathedral School is more special than any other schools. For a start do you feel safe at your school?
Sacred Heart Cathedral School has teachers that you can communicate with easily, for example if you are stuck on a question or a worksheet, your teacher will surely understand what you will need help with. After school has finished, you could be in a rush trying to catch a bus, train or even a taxi, well… no problem the train station/bus station is only like a five minute walk from the school. And if you are staying at school, you can apply yourself at After School Care (ASC), After School Care is the right place to be when staying at school after school, it provides you with food, care which makes you feel safe and play time so you can stretch your body.
Furthermore, when you’re doing work at school and you don’t have any calculators to check your work, you can go on a chromebook instead, the schools chromebooks are advanced. Don’t ever get bored with this school because this school has a lot of fun school trips such as Beach Day where you go to the beach for one whole day!, ASB (sports centre), Capital E, visiting other schools and a lot of fun festivals.
At morning tea or lunch time, you can’t get bored having not balls to play with, there is a lot of equipment at this school to play with. There are also soccer goals if you’re a soccer fan like me. This school is Catholic and there is a church nearby (about a one minute walk), and this school shows a lot of virtues like love and to care for one another. Not to forget this school has a Chinese teacher which means we (she’s a girl) have Chinsese lessons.
To conclude, I definitely think that Sacred Heart is very, very, very special and you should attend this school. It has loving teachers who show a lot of respect for us children. This school has a lot of equipment to play with. Everyone in this school will certainly welcome new people, so don’t hesitate to join this loving school.
