As you will no doubt have read in the media, there has been a rapid increase in the spread of measles in NZ, in particular in the Auckland area. This is a highly contagious disease. It is only a matter of time before Wellington cases of measles will also increase. It is important that we work together and minimise the impact of this significant illness.
It will not be a problem for students who have completed the standard national vaccination schedule at 15 months and 4 years. But for those who haven't (or if parents are unsure of their student's vaccination status), please contact your GP/Practice Nurse ASAP to check or vaccinate as necessary.Immunisation is free.
Here is the link to the Ministry of Health website which has signs and symptoms to look out for plus provides up to date information on the current national spread of measles.Your child needs to stay at home if they are feeling unwell or are showing any symptoms. E.g. fever, cough, red eyes, runny nose or a rash.
Measles is very contagious. Therefore, we would also like to stress the importance of keeping students isolated at home if they develop any symptoms or even THINK they may have contracted measles (until they have been given the all clear that they do not have the virus).
We appreciate your co-operation in this matter.
A Reflection from Father James
It’s common practice to use a block of initials in referring to corporations or government departments that have long titles. DHB (District Health Board), MOW (Ministry of Works) and UNESCO are a few examples. Civic Honours are similarly known by initials: KCMG, QSM, MBE…
Words themselves are often broken down to their individual letters to give an additional meaning. For instance, in popular thought, the word POSH which emphasises opulence and elegance, denotes First Class tickets on ships to and from India: Port Out, Starboard Home!
There are also acronyms in church language and symbols, although they are displayed rather than spoken. Among the most obvious is IHS, printed on vestments or as a stylised design on altar fronts or floors. Sometimes explained as In His Service, it really denotes the first three Greek letters in the name, JESUS. Another is the CHI-RHO sign – depicted as an X superimposed over an R. This is the first three letters of the Greek spelling of CHRIST.
Look for these symbols next time you visit a church. Design one to illustrate you own Christian commitment or way of life.
Weekly Update from Bernadette Murfitt
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
It was a beautiful send off to Mike Loftus last Friday at St. Mary's of the Angels. Ella and Amanda, you are in our thoughts and prayers as you live without Mike. Special thanks to our school families who have embraced the Loftus family with love, kindness and support.
The following is a beautiful prayer that the Loftus Family asked me to say:
The time has come
The time has come to let you go away.
To journey on the path we too will tread.
Though tears may fall, they fall not in despair,
But in the hope that we will meet again.
Response:
O loving God you claim us as your own.
Take now our loved one lead him safely home.
The time has come for thanks and praise to sound,
For now you see love clearly face to face.
The life you gave will now become your crown.
Our prayers commend you to the Lord’s embrace.
Response:
The time has come for voices to be stilled.
No words can tell nor utter love so deep.
You are no more among the days we live,
Yet more alive you are, though now you sleep.
This week we are celebrating Tongan Language week.
The theme for this year is: Fakakoloa 'o Aotearoa 'aki 'a e Tauhi Fonua - A Tongan Perspective of Enriching Aotearoa, New Zealand.
"My parents taught me the Tongan language. I really like Tongan food, my favourite is chop suey which my dad makes! I remember visiting Tonga five years ago. It was a lot hotter than in New Zealand. We spent time with our relatives and I remember going to a craft/food market. You could buy bracelets/necklaces with your name made out of shells!"
Litia Rm 10
"We (Litia and myself) have learnt a lot of different Tongan dances for different occasions. We wear a special dance outfit, with shell necklaces and feathers in our hair. We go to dance classes twice a week - we love learning all the different dances. Every year we perform as part of the Wellington Anniversary day celebration on the waterfront. There are about 17 dancers in our performance group, ranging in age from 7-18year olds. We are so lucky my dad and my uncle take the time to teach us all these different dances!"

Te Wiki o te reo Māori begins Monday 9 September. The theme for this year’s Māori Language Week is ‘Kia Kaha te reo Māori’, which is a call to all New Zealanders to work together to strengthen te reo Māori. Staff have a wide range of activities planned including going over to Parliament for the annual parade and sausage sizzle with St. Mary's College. We are encouraging each student to request their sausage using te reo.
Testing day for the Rugby World Cup is this Friday. Try and get as many sponsors as you can for our final phase of our playground.
On Wednesday, 25 September at 1.30-2.30pm, we are looking forward to having an open afternoon where you can wander throughout our school look at amazing "artworks" the children at Sacred Heart Cathedral School have created.
We are collecting Yummy stickers for PE equipment - this ends at the end of September. Please hand to your child's teacher.
Special thanks for your ongoing support. We are all blessed to be a part of a great Catholic learning community.
Arohanui,
Bernadette Murfitt

Sacred Heart Cathedral School
Dear God,
You come to us in Jesus who teaches us that the way to happiness is through our love for one another.
Watch over the teachers, students and families of Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we try to be faithful to this teaching.
Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.

Practical Strategies to Protect and Promote Well-being
The following slides are from a presentation last week from Doctor Denise Quinlan from the New Zealand Institute of Wellbeing and Resilience.

Inspirational Speaker: Graci Kim
Thanks to Ms. Wood for taking a group of our Year 7/8 children to Marsden School on Monday, 2 September to listen to an Inspirational speaker - Graci Kim. Graci is a Korean-Kiwi author and diplomat who believes in the power of creativity and play. When not at work with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Graci writes young adult fiction about strong girls, full of dreams and hungry for magic.
"On Monday, a small group of us bussed to Marsden School to listen to Graci KIm. We heard all about her journey to success, and learnt the importance of curiosity, creativity, and play, Graci also emphasized resilience and gratefulness. She is a very successful entrepreneur who has started many awesome businesses, and she’s currently writing a book. She was really inspiring, and we were very lucky to have the opportunity to listen to her. Thank you to Ms. Wood for taking us."
Annabelle, Rm 8.
Mathswell
The Year 7/8 team from Sacred Heart, Annabelle, Nathan, Julianne, Eva, Cara and Noah A-K, who competed in the Mathswell competition against 39 other schools, last Wednesday, came 12th. Well done team!
Any children sitting this test will need earbuds/earphones - we do have some at school. Children wanting to use their own earbuds/earphones will need to bring these to school next week, so it can be checked that it works with the chromebooks. The test will be on Wednesday, 11 September. Thank you.
Tala, Rm 2 has lost her black Kathmandu puffer jacket. It has her name on it. Please check your child's puffer jacket and if found, please return to Room 2. Thank you.
