Dear God,
You come to us in Jesus who teaches us that the way to happiness is through our love for one another.
Watch over the teachers, students and families of Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we try to be faithful to this teaching.
Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.
Board Election on 10th September 2025
This is a school trustee election year and the election will take place on Wednesday, 10th September 2025. Nominations for the five parent representative positions will be called by Friday, 18th July.
Boards work best when they reflect the diversity of our communities.
If you have skills and strengths that you would like to share with our school community - consider being a trustee.

Weekly Update from Bernadette Murfitt
Kia ora koutou e te whānau,
Thank you for all the support you have given us over the term - it is so appreciated. I want to thank you all for picking up and dropping off down on Hill Street. There has been a marked reduction of vehicles coming up Guidford Terrace - keeping our precious children safe is number 1 for us all.
We are delighted with the learning that our students are achieving, as well as all the extras, such as sports and presenting at events, which all contribute to the makeup of each child. We had a great turnout for our interviews this week - top marks to both teachers and parents. When home and school work together, learning will flourish and accelerate.
If you know that your child will not be coming back to Sacred Heart next year or if you have a child turning 5 in 2026, can you please reach out to Cathy or Frances. Our roll is nearing closure and I just wanted to make sure our numbers are accurate and I have taken siblings into account.
Don't forget to book your tickets for our musical bingo night. This will be a great family night with amazing prizes to be won.
We will be celebrating the Feast of the Sacred Heart this Friday. You are welcome to join us for the liturgy in the Cathedral at 12.10 PM.
Dear Jesus,
We thank you for Your kind and loving heart. Your heart is full of love for all people,
and it always cares for children at our school.
On this special day, we remember how much you love us — so much that you gave everything for us.
Sacred Heart of Jesus, we give you our hearts today. Fill them with love, peace, and joy, so we can be more like You every day.
Amen.
Please have a wonderful break over the holiday period, and when we return to school, the days will start to get slightly longer again.
See you all back in Term 3 on Monday, 14th July at 8:40 AM.
Arohanui,
Bernadette Murfitt

Sacred Heart Cathedral School
Attendance continues to be a top priority for the government, which has set a target of 80% of students attending school for more than 90% of the term by 2030. To achieve this, schools must aspire to reach an average daily attendance rate above 94%.
Last week, 16th-18th June, we were 87.99%.
Please use SchoolAppsNZ to report your child's absence. Thank you.
If your child has a sibling turning 5 years old (new entrant) or older (up to Year 8 level of age), please fill out an enrolment form for your child. Please click on this link to download the enrolment forms under the “Enrolment Pack” section of the school website: https://sacred-heart.school.nz/our-school/enrolment/. Once you have filled in and completed the enrolment forms, please scan them back to us and email the forms to the office at office@sacred-heart.school.nz on or before the 31st of July at 12:00 noon.
Sacred Heart Feast Day on Friday (27th June)
On Friday, 27th June, we will be celebrating Sacred Heart Feast Day. We will have a school liturgy at the Cathedral, 12:10 PM. You are welcome to join us. Please note that we are unable to provide parking at the playground due to our students having a play at the playground for lunch break.
Term 2 Ends on Friday (27th June)
On Friday, 27th June is the last day of Term 2. We look forward to seeing all our students back in Term 3 on Monday, 14th July, at 8:40 AM, and wearing their complete winter uniform.
Grandparents Photos for the Grandparents Liturgy in Term 3
Next term, we are celebrating our grandparents. We ask families to email some photos of their grandparents with their grandchildren to share in our Grandparents’ Liturgy in Term 3, Friday, 25th July at 9:30 AM, Metropolitan Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, 40 Hill Street, Thorndon.
Please email Hannah Ryan in Room 6 - hannah.ryan@sacred-heart.school.nz.
Please make sure you name the people in the photo.
Congratulations to Caelum (Room 5), who participated in the IRMTNZ Youth Music Festival 2025 last weekend.

NETBALL:
Matariki Netball Tournament Update:
On Sunday, 22nd June, we entered a Year 5 & 6 team into Motu Kairangi's first Matariki netball Tournament.
The tournament was designed to align with Matariki, the Māori New Year, emphasising values of reflection, renewal, and community connection - principles that resonated perfectly with our Ohana philosophy of family and togetherness.
The SHCS Ohana had an outstanding tournament run, winning every single game in pool play to secure their spot in the final. This impressive streak demonstrated the team's skill, preparation, and unwavering commitment to each other.
While the final didn't go our way, Ohana finished in 2nd place (runners-up) against Hutt Valley School.
The experience gained from the Matariki Tournament will serve our team well as we continue through the season.
We extend our gratitude to all the whānau who came out to support our team, and to the tournament organisers who created such a meaningful celebration of sport and culture.

Motu Kairangi Netball Tournament Update:
The Sacred Heart Magic had a fantastic day at the Motu Kairangi Netball Tournament on Sunday!
The team played four impressive round robin games before edging out Wadestown Blizzard 7–6 in a thrilling semi-final.
In the final against the Brooklyn Anacondas, Sacred Heart took an early lead and maintained their momentum with strong teamwork, sharp passing through the centre court, and some spectacular goals. The team's strong defence was outstanding, with numerous intercepts and clever play to disrupt the opposition. All their hard work paid off as they claimed a well-deserved 9–4 victory and secured 1st place for Pool B. Well done to the team!

We have had a lot of interest in basketball this term, and have 6 teams playing at Nairnville.
