Paid Union Meeting has been postponed
This meeting has been postponed.
Please be advised that the NZEI have postponed the upcoming paid union meeting for the teachers this Thursday 21 March.
Welcome to 2019 at Sacred Heart Cathedral School and a special welcome to the new families joining our school.
At the end of last year, Frank McLaughlin retired from the Board after many years of service. At the Board’s last meeting of 2018 I was elected as the new Board Chair. For those of you who do not know me, Matthew and I have 3 children at the school (Alice in year 7, James in year 4 and Charles in year 1) and our eldest, Elizabeth, has just started in year 9. I look forward to meeting new families at the upcoming social events (the Junior and Middles Wheels night on 15 February and the Senior Pool night on 22 February).
There are quite a few things I would like to update our school community on and I will update you throughout the year on areas the Board is working on.
Our principal takes a lead role
Congratulations to our Principal, Bernadette Murfitt, who has been named as the co-leader of the Community of Learning/Kāhui Ako, a collective bringing together 13 Catholic schools across the Wellington region.
The Ministry of Education guided Kāhui Ako presents a wonderful opportunity for the participating schools and their students. The 13 schools will work together to ensure their communities nurtures, supports and cares for all its students to achieve the goal of lifting student achievement by the end of 2021.
The Sacred Heart Cathedral School community should be extremely proud that Bernadette’s strong leadership skills have been recognised and we know that all our students will benefit greatly from our involvement in this exciting initiative. We are proud of our student achievement levels and this is yet another way we can focus on our mission of “educating our children within a Catholic environment to achieve their full spiritual, academic and personal potential.”
As part of this leadership role, the Ministry funds release time which will be carried out by our Deputy Principal Christine Geraghty taking on the duties of Principal when Bernadette is offsite.
The Board, Bernadette and our teachers remain strongly focused on the best interests of our students and being part of this initiative is an extremely positive step.
Education Review Office Visit
In December 2018, the Education Review Office visited Sacred Heart Cathedral School to undertake an evaluation of the school. The final report from this visit has recently been released.
The report has some very positive messages such as “Students have many meaningful opportunities to lead, participate and celebrate success across the curriculum. There is a schoolwide focus on students knowing the purpose of their learning. High levels of student engagement are evident. Students speak confidently, are proud of their school and demonstrate a strong sense of belonging.”
Two areas for further development were identified:
- teachers continuing to promote student choice, agency and knowledge of their learning; and
- leaders, teachers and trustees strengthening internal evaluation to better determine the impact and effectiveness of programmes and initiatives on outcomes for students.
We have taken the feedback from this report into account when setting our goals in the 2019 Annual Plan and in drafting our Strategic Plan for 2019-2024.
The 2019 Annual Plan and the Strategic Plan are available on the school website. Once published the ERO report will also be available on the school website
Cathedral roof and Connolly Hall
As you may be aware, work has been undertaken on the roof of the Cathedral to limit movement towards Connolly Hall and the Chapel. This work has been done to allow Connolly Hall and the Chapel to be used whilst the main cathedral building remains closed to the public. With the restraint work, the Cathedral has been assessed as having a strength level of 34% NBS (IL3). The Board has asked for clarification from the Archdiocese on this rating and on the plans for full remediation (as the Archdiocese policy consider buildings over 34%NBS can be used but with a plan for remediation). The Board has decided that until we have a better understanding of the plans, we should take a precautionary approach and the school will not use Connolly Hall, the Chapel or the Piazza (for school play).
The temporary restraint secures the Cathedral roof in three directions but not in the direction of Hill St. We are conscious that students wait adjacent to the Cathedral on Hill Street for their after-school pick-up and parents park under the shadow of the Cathedral. Parents may wish to consider students who are waiting for pick up do so further down Hill Street past the Piazza steps or cross at the pedestrian crossing and wait on the other side of the road. Ultimately this is a matter for parents to determine. We have been informed that Guildford Terrace itself is unlikely to be at risk from a shifting roof.
School Trustee Triennial Election
This is a school trustee election year and the election will take place on 7 June 2019. We have appointed Frances Galan as the Returning Officer and will be calling for nominations for the five parent representative positions by 10 May. Further information will follow but please contact me if you would like to know more about being a parent trustee.
If you have any questions about the above, please email or call me (suzanneadair@hotmail.com , 021 039 7558).

"I especially liked the game we played with the batons - we started with 4 children and 3 batons in the water. It was a race to dive in and get the baton. Then it was 3 children with 2 batons... I really liked playing this game." Owen Rm 6.

Our senior syndicate students have been out and about Wellington this week, participating in various outdoor activities.
"We made a news channel called "Eye on the Hive" and afterwards we saw ourselves on the Capital E website and YouTube. It was amazing, I enjoyed helping direct people around." Lonsei Rm 8
Here are some photos from Room 8's visit to the Beehive and Capital E.

The Parents and Friends Committee invite all senior students and parents/caregivers to a pool party at Thorndon pool on Friday, 21 February from 5-7pm. RSVP for catering purposes to Cathy (cathy@sacred-heart.school.nz stating name of child and numbers attending). Please note that each child attending must have a parent/caregiver present. Archdiocesan Boys' Choir - Is your child interested in joining?
Does your son love music or love to sing? If he does, then the Boys’ Choir based at the Metropolitan Cathedral is a fantastic opportunity for him to extend his musical knowledge and grow within a supportive fun environment. The choir is made up of boys from around the Wellington region aged from 7-12 and no previous experience of singing in choir or musical training is necessary.
Unlike other choirs in Wellington, there are no weekly costs to parents for the choir and vocal and theory tutoring they receive. Over their time in the choir, boys will learn sound vocal technique, music theory, life-skills, teamwork, as well as grow in confidence and discipline. Teachers and parents see the boys’ language skills, reading comprehension skills, maths skills and confidence improve greatly by being a part of the choir.
So, if that sounds like your son, or someone you know, then encourage them to audition and contact Michael Fletcher, Director of Music, Metropolitan Cathedral or email m.fletcher@wn.catholic.org.nz or phone 04 496 1780.

Still places to book in for Kids Yoga Classes. Kids Yoga NZ has a special deal on for term 1. One student $75 (normally $95) or $130 (normally $150) for siblings (2 students). There are so many choices available to parents these days for extra-curricular physical activity for children, so why choose kids yoga over other physical/movement-based classes? Kid’s yoga goes beyond getting kids physically active and healthy. Kids Yoga NZ Instructors strive to maintain a balance between spontaneity and structure - so that children of all ages participating in the class learn to listen to themselves (and each other) and express themselves creatively. The mix of stories, song, games, music, mindfulness and yoga poses creates a multi-sensory, tactile environment, where children develop through kinesthetic, visual, and aural learning.
