Watch over the teachers, students and families of Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we try to be faithful to this teaching.
Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.
Weekly Update From Bernadette Murfitt
We had a wonderful Father's Day Liturgy last Thursday and we are very grateful to everyone who came and supported us all.
The students were incredible with their singing and sharing of blessings and karakia. Special thanks to Geraldine, Frankie and Adele who organised and served morning tea. Thank you to everyone who took time out of their busy day to support us.

Netball:
We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the incredible parents who volunteered their time to coach and manage our netball teams this season. Your dedication, support, and encouragement made all the difference, both on and off the court. From organising practices and games to offering guidance and motivation, your hard work has not gone unnoticed.
Your commitment has not only helped our players grow in their skills but has also built a strong sense of teamwork and sportsmanship. We are truly grateful for all that you've done to make this a successful and enjoyable experience.

Thank you for being such an important part of our team!
It’s Te Wiki o te Reo Māori | Māori Language Week next week and this year’s theme is ‘Ake ake ake – A forever language’, echoing the adaptability and resilience of te reo Māori. We have many exciting activities planned for our tamariki plus our Art Exhibition. Looking forward to seeing you all next Tuesday from 4.30pm as you view the amazing creations across all classrooms.
Have a wonderful week and thank you for all the support you give us.
Arohanui,
Bernadette Murfitt

Attendance & Punctuality Matters
85% were in class from 2nd to 6th September.
Let's work on punctuality. School starts at 8.40 AM.
We open the doors at 8.10 AM - a little earlier if it is cold and wet.
1. Regular attendance at school helps build and maintain a child's learning and positive daily habits and routines, as well as promote their well-being by connecting them to their peers and learning new things.
2. We want our tamariki to thrive and be resilient and active members within their whānau and community.
3. Attendance matters and we can all work together to increase school attendance.
Please ensure your child attends school every day unless they are sick.
In terms of punctuality - encourage your child to prepare their lunch and bag the night before so logistics will go smoothly in the morning.
Being at school is key to students growing in their learning and social development. Regular time off will mean gaps in learning. We acknowledge that life happens and students may experience sickness or there may be family challenges to navigate. Please reach out if you need support in getting your child to school.

Measles Update – Looking Ahead:
Measles is dangerous and contagious, especially in communities with low vaccination rates. Although New Zealand continues to be free of measles, it could arrive at any time. We encourage everyone to check if they are immune to measles, especially those planning to travel overseas for the school holidays. The key message: if you aren’t sure, get vaccinated.
Measles immunity – Te Whatu Ora
Please help yourself to any second-hand uniform that you need for your whānau.
Early next term, we have our new to Sacred Heart evening and I will encourage our new families to help themselves. There is so much and a good range of sizes. Help yourself.
Our senior students reading at the local day care. We are creating a love of reading in our community.
Thank you to Javi and Dishan (Room 9) for helping Fr James with today's liturgy service.
Wear Your PJs To School This Friday (13th September)
Our Student Council have organised a PJ Day this Friday, 13th September.
There is no cost but if you wanted to contribute to the Parish foodbank that would be greatly appreciated.

Junior Syndicate Swimming Notice 2024
We are excited to announce that our swimming lessons at the Kilbirnie Aquatic Centre will begin on Tuesday, 15th October. The lessons will run every Tuesday for eight weeks, concluding on Tuesday, 3rd December. The schedule for these lessons is from 9:30 am to 10:30 am.
The children will travel to and from the Aquatic Centre by bus, departing from school at 9:00 am and returning by 11:00 am to resume their school day. Please ensure that your child arrives on time on swimming days, as late arrivals will miss the bus and consequently, the swimming lesson.

On swimming days, students are required to wear their school uniform. They may wear their togs under their uniform for convenience. Please make sure that all of your child’s belongings are clearly named, including togs, goggles, caps, socks, shoes, underwear, shirts, shorts, jackets, bags, blouses, towels, and dresses. Everything should be packed in a named plastic bag. Additionally, it would be beneficial if your child practices changing their clothes quickly and independently and drying themselves.
We also need volunteers to assist with changing the children. If you are available to help, we would greatly appreciate your support. Please click and complete the Google Form - https://forms.gle/kspRhL5E1cccRSHH6 by Friday, 20th September.
Thank you for your cooperation and support.
Sacred Heart Cathedral School Art Exhibition
On Tuesday, 17th September from 4.30 pm to 6.30 pm, Sacred Heart Cathedral School will be holding its Art Exhibition. Each class has been busy preparing a wide variety of art pieces. We have prepared a booklet for each family to work through, finding clues in each room and having a prize draw for the families that solve the riddle. We would love to see as many families as possible celebrate our commitment to the Arts.
Market Day On Thursday (19th September)
On Thursday, 19th of September at 11am, we are having our annual Market Day to fundraise for the school. It will involve activities with prizes, food and items to buy. All the stalls will be run by the Year 7 and Year 8 students.
We are asking for any used toys or books that you no longer wish to have to be donated for our Market Day. If you have these items, please bring them to school this week and give them to the teachers of the senior syndicate next week. The following week we will be asking for any food items to sell as well and we will be having a sausage sizzle with a limited number of hamburgers to sell.
The week beginning 9th September are books and toys then the week beginning 16th September are food items (baking, lollies, chocolates, fruit kebabs, etc).
Thanking you in advance for your generosity.
Sincerely,
The Senior Syndicate Team - Ms Ryan, Mrs Geraghty and Mr Sah.

Sacred Heart Ruamoko (Year 5/6 Div 1) vs Hataitai Griffins won 37-15.
Sacred Heart Tangaroa (Year 5/6 Div 5) vs Mt Cook Cookie Monsters lost 20-22. This was an exciting and fast-paced game. We only had 6 players so everyone had to work hard on defence and make fast breaks when on attack. The player of the day award went to the whole team to recognise the team spirit and contribution that all players made.
Sacred Heart Tawhirimatea (Girls League) - Amazing win by Tawhirimatea 45-3 who played Holy Cross Kahurangi. Great teamwork by everyone! Player of the day was Asu (Room 7) for her great vision on court attack and in defence. Special mention to Violet (Room 6) for her great defence on a player twice her height.
Sacred Heart Krispy Kreme (Year 7/8 Div 1) vs St Anne's Mavericks won 24-23.
Sacred Heart Dunkin Donuts (Year 7/8 Div 4) vs CQS Kereru lost 10-28. Player of the day was Ezekiel (Room 8).

Sacred Heart Angels (Year 5/6 B) unfortunately lost 7-9 to Nga Mokopuna Tiena. The Angels started to gain traction in the last quarter but unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be! Player of the day was Kundiso (Room 7) for her amazing defence and mid court play! Special mention to Lyla (Room 6) for her great rebounds and shooting. Also, special shout out to the whole Angels team as they finished second on the table in their grade Year 5 & 6 B grade!
The girls worked so hard this year and really came together as a team, as we had a mixture of new and experienced and younger players in our team and I am incredibly proud of how far they had come and how proud I was coaching them this year! - Lalita
We have our Netball Prizegiving on Sunday, which is a great way to finish off our season and recognize all the players, coaches, managers and of course parents!
Sacred Heart Ace (Year 7/8 A) - Fantastic last game of the season. You were All Players of the Day! Thank you for being so cool! You are a brilliant team always looking out for each other, displaying exemplary conduct, sportsmanship, and progressing so much being promoted to Grade A. We are very proud and honoured to have coached you. See ya at the end of season prize giving! - Ness & Rach
Sacred Heart Shooting Stars (Year 7/8 C) played Brooklyn Turbines and lost 14-22. The Stars put in a great performance on Saturday for their final game, bit of a nail biter right until the end!! The final score doesn’t quite reflect just how much possession we had throughout, they all worked hard as a team and left it all out on the court and had fun too which was great to see . A big thank you to all of our supporters for cheering us on throughout the season, we’ve appreciated having you all there each week!!
