Weekly Update from Bernadette Murfitt
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Special thanks to our wonderful families who were on netball duty at the courts in the weekend. We not only have great teams on court but also behind the scenes with our great network of helpers.
This Thursday is the Feast of the Assumption. We will be holding Masses in the school library:
9.15am: Junior Syndicate
9.45am: Rooms 5 & 10
10.55am: Rooms 6 & 7
2.00pm: Rooms 8 & 9 - this will be in Room 9.
Father in heaven,
all creation rightly gives you praise,
for all life and all holiness come from you.
In the plan of your wisdom
she who bore the Christ in was raised body and soul in glory to be with him in heaven.
May we follow her example in reflecting your holiness
and join in her hymn of endless love and praise.
We ask this through Christ, Our Lord.
Michael from Caritas spoke to all students in assembly on Monday about fairness and equality he has worked with all classes this week. A powerful message for us all which we will endeavour to expand upon during Social Justice Week.
John Burland, a musician with a Catholic focus will be visiting us on Monday 26th August - his concert will be at St. Mary's Hall at 9:00am - families are most welcome to attend. Later on in the day we will gather back at the hall for our Father's Day Liturgy.
Last week, I spent time with other Catholic Principals. Two presentations that were an absolute highlight were from Cardinal John and Father James. Cardinal John shared an insight into the leadership of Pope Francis and linked it to our everyday life as a Principal in a Catholic School. He challenged us all to keep knowing ourselves, being comfortable with our own identity and journeying together.
Father James presented on the importance of inner space and making time for ourselves. He shared the following prayer with us all.
Thank You loving God for your gift of space.
Thank you for the space that has given me room to move; to get to know myself as distinct from others; to get to be comfortable with myself.
Thank you for the space that surrounds me; that tells me of other spaces; that honours my uniqueness while showing me I'm not alone in space.
Thank you for the space that both separates and unites; is both personal and public; delights to hold me yet wants to know mine is not the only space.
Thank you for the space that enters my space; that draws me to others, to celebrate ther space, to appreciate togetherness, to understand that my space cannot be lived in isolation.
Thank you for the space between each person that gives meaning to our own space, as links in a necklace highlight the beauty of each pearl.
Thank you for the space that opens out to reveal the wonder of your eternal space and the glory of creation.
Thank you loving God, for your gift of space.
Make sure you give yourself a little space this week to recharge and energise yourself.
If you have any concerns around your child's learning or behaviour at school, please contact your child's teacher so we can work together for a positive outcome.
I have noticed that the number of students who are late to school has reduced over the past few weeks. Special thanks for supporting your child so they can be at school ready for an active day of learning.
On 26th August, we have been invited to an event over at Parliament to celebrate the Silver Ferns winning Gold at the recent World Champs. It is going to be a busy day, with our concert in the morning, Silver Ferns at lunchtime and Father's Day liturgy in the afternoon. We will have an early lunch break that day.
Special thanks for all that you do for our school.
Have a great week.

A Reflection from Father James
Planning for the future is considered wise business policy; setting a programme for yourself in order to achieve a particular goal is also a good idea. People invest time, energy and finance into anticipating – and hoping for – the future high cost of a product or resource. Unfortunately, concern about what might, could or should happen, can leave you not appreciating what you now have.
Jesus tells of the person who had more than enough but built bigger barns to store away even more for a comfortable future. Then he died before he could enjoy it. Sometimes our planning is too much about ourselves. Then it’s easy to forget that we are really here for one another, not just to help ourselves. We can also forget that nothing we have or achieve is without the help of others, and that our life is surrounded and supported by gifts such as light and air, colour and landscape, family and friends.
Here’s a saying that’s worth reflecting on: Look not back in anger, nor forward in fear; but around, in awareness.
Dear God,
You come to us in Jesus who teaches us that the way to happiness is through our love for one another.
Watch over the teachers, students and families of Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we try to be faithful to this teaching.
Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.

Mathletics Gold Certificate
Lucas from Room 2 was awarded a gold certificate in Mathletics. Well done Lucas!
Last week was Cook Island language week and my Aunty, Mum and Grandmother came to teach my class (Room 7) about the Cook Islands! They taught us how to say some simple greetings like kia orana. They brought in some Cook Island items like an Ei (a flower headband that goes around your head), a Tivaevae ( a traditional Cook Island blanket), a pareu (sarong) and a painting of an Ei. My Grandmother taught us about some of the history of the Cook Islands and taught us about some traditions. My class and I were really appreciative that they came and taught us about the beautiful Cook Islands!

High attendance = Improved Learning
