Weekly Update from Bernadette Murfitt
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Kia orāna!
The annual ‘Epetoma o te reo Māori Kūki ’Āirani: Cook Islands Language Week is being held from 4–10 August 2019. The theme for this year is "Taku rama, taau toi: ora te Reo" - "My Torch, Your Adze: The Language Lives."
Cook Islands Language Week is a chance for all Kiwis to celebrate and learn about the rich languages and culture of the Cook Islands.
We are delighted to have Mrs Hewson née Smyth back with us after her marriage celebrations in Ireland. It was a beautiful sunny day in Cork and Clare and Johnny enjoyed sharing their special day with family and friends.
We are really enjoying the sun and our children being able to get outside during breaks and for physical education. It is a little chilly in the morning please make sure that your child is wrapped up.

Father Doug has made a great start with class Masses. These have been very special for the students and staff. We are very appreciative of Father Doug being in our school complementing the delivery of our Religious Education Programme.

For the remainder of the week I am attending the Wellington Catholic Primary Principals' Conference in Martinborough.
Thanking you all for the wonderful way you support our school.
Arohanui,
Bernadette Murfitt
Principal, Sacred Heart Cathedral School
Welcome Back to the new Mrs Hewson
Welcome back Clare!
Mrs. Hewson is back from Ireland. She had a wonderful wedding day in Cork.

A Reflection from Father James
When you were baptised you were buried with Christ. St. Paul affirms this in his letter to the Colossians [2:12-14]. It seems a harsh statement but one we dare not overlook.
Burial presupposes death and there is a real “dying” in being baptised. We die to a life without Christ. We die to all the negatives that threaten happiness, that tempt us away from gifting ourselves, that appeal to selfishness: don’t bother about anyone else; don’t feel sorry for anyone; don’t get side-tracked from your own pursuit of riches, success.
Traditionally, the baptismal font is shaped to represent a tomb, and the water into which we plunge, a symbolic drowning. We die, as Jesus did, to whatever is incompatible to his way of life. But, the font also represents a womb, and the waters carry the baptised person into life – into life, and to live, with Jesus.
Appreciating this two-fold imagery is an important step to grasping the full reality of what it means to be baptised a Christian. We die and we come to life in the same celebration, opting for life with Jesus and all that option implies.

Dear God,
You come to us in Jesus who teaches us that the way to happiness is through our love for one another.
Watch over the teachers, students and families of Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we try to be faithful to this teaching.
Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.
2019 After School Care Survey summary
Thank you to all who responded to the recent survey. Your response to the survey helps us to continue to provide and further create a programme that meets the needs of parents and children.
We have recently had a very positive review and Social Services Accreditation confirmation of Level 3 OSCAR for our After School Care (ASC) programme.
Overview of ASC
Sacred Heart Cathedral School oversees the running of the ASC Programme. This is delegated to Bernadette Murfitt.
Robyn Jones is the Supervisor and Lani Vae’au is the Deputy Supervisor. The Assistant supervisors attend University or St Mary’s College.
Expectations for ASC are exactly the same as our school expectations. There is a visual display in the ASC room showing these expectations:
- Be safe
- Be responsible
- Be respectful
ASC is currently charged out at $55.00 per week or $15.00 per day for casual attendance.
ASC runs from 2.40 pm to 5.30pm during term time.
The daily routine comprises of a short play, roll call, afternoon tea, home learning, followed by games and activities.
Home Learning will be a supportive time for students where they will complete activities within a supportive environment.
After School Care contact details and the schedule of fees is available on the school website and in the weekly newsletter.
We ask that for casual attendance at ASC both Cathy in the school office and Robyn are notified ensuring students who are attending ASC can be accounted for.
Survey response
The majority of respondents from the survey felt the staff were warm and welcoming. Professional Development will be centred on staff informing parents on what their child has done at ASC and ensuring that all communications with families are future focussed and positive.
We have taken on board feedback and ideas in relation to food and are working with the Heart Foundation to roll out Healthy Food options. The Heart Foundation were impressed with what was on offer within our monthly food budget. We are increasing the food budget with the start of the new food options. We are also investigating whether we can register ASC with the Ministry of Primary Industry (MPI) Food Control Plan.
In the last two years seating, storage and a TV have been purchased for ASC and we plan to make the room more homely with beanbags and lilypads for children to sit on.
Toaiva Rm 7 competed first in Samoa at the Samoa Junior Open 2019 with Lonasei Rm 8 and Mataniu Rm 2. Secondly still in Samoa she competed in the Pro Am leading up to the main Samoa Open. She did really well for her age and it was more the experience and the exposure playing against not only girls and boys around her age but also playing with the adults in the Pro Am. We spent 2 weeks in Samoa before we flew to San Diego for a 3 day golf tournament and then to Las Vegas for another 3 day tournament. Throughout both tournaments she did really well and we were proud of her effort. She was playing mostly 10 year old girls from all over the world which again the experience was the main thing. I think the weather in America was too hot for her and us all but hey it was better than being back in the cold.
We’ve got a few photos of her in Samoa as well as America for your newsletter.

Special thanks to all of the students who entertained at the Home of Compassion last Thursday. The students brought so much joy to lives of some of the residents at local rest homes. Special thanks to Jane Regan who supported and organised this event.
