Weekly Update from Bernadette Murfitt
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Special thanks to Talikha Rm 9, who represented our school at the 184th anniversary of Suzanne Aubert's birth at St. Anne's Church last Wednesday evening.
We will be celebrating our School Feast Day this Friday. Liturgy Leaders will be leading students in prayer to celebrate the Feast of the Sacred Heart. This will occur in classrooms, you are most welcome to join us at 9 am in your child's room. In the afternoon we will go over to St Mary's College for a sharing of creative talent. This will start just after 1 pm. We have had to modify our usual celebrations as we have limited access to buildings that can accommodate our whole school.
Our Year 7 and 8 students have thoroughly enjoyed participating in a science programme at St Mary's College. Throughout the term students learnt how to use bunsen burners, microscopes and even made slides to look at crystals they grew.
"I enjoyed looking at the cells through the microscope. It was all magnified so you could look at it better." Declan Rm 9
"I enjoyed learning about pH and acids and basic, most of this was new learning for me." Charlize Rm 9
"I enjoyed looking at an onion through a microscope , it looked so different I could see cells and the membrane." Ella Rm 9
Welcome to Yulia who is in Room 7 - we hope you enjoy your time at Sacred Heart Cathedral School.

Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,

MATARIKI
‘The eye’s of the God Tāwhirimātea’
In the beginning at the time of the separation of Ranginui (Sky father) and Papatuanuku (Earth mother), Tāwhirimātea (God of the Winds) became distraught with the fact that his parents had been separated by his siblings. Angry, he gouged his eyes out and threw them into the heavens. Matariki, the cluster of stars, represent the discarded eyes of Tāwhirimātea.
It is this cluster of stars that appear in the month of June that represents the arrival of the Māori New Year. Traditionally, it was a time to remember those that had passed away, this would consist of a Hāngi (Earth Oven Feast) being prepared and shared amongst family, celebrating with Waiata (Songs) and Haka (Posture Dances).
This brought families together during the winter months, and became an opportune time to share the stories of the past, to the children of the future, as a means of retaining the history, revitalising the māori language, and rejoicing in life. The scientific name of this cluster is Pleiades.
Sacred Heart Jade played EBIS Stylahs and won 27-13. Eden Rm 8 was awarded Player of the Day.
Sacred Heart Ferns played EBIS Kiwis and lost 14-26. Ella Rm 9 was awarded Player of the Day.
Sacred Heart Emeralds played Brooklyn Sapphires and lost 4-14. Estella Rm 10 was awarded Player of the Day.

Message from Caritas - We invite you to a ‘Jubilee Year’ celebration of Caritas’ work of justice, peace and integral human development.
Fifty years ago, the New Zealand Catholic Bishops Conference/He Huinga o ngā Pīhopa Katorika o Aotearoa established national bodies for Catholic overseas aid, justice and peace, and provision of lay volunteers overseas. Today, these works are found in Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand.
Together with our partners, associates and supporters, we work for a world free of poverty and injustice. We are delighted to invite you to join us and the Archdiocese of Wellington at a Mass presided over by Cardinal John Dew to celebrate the 50th year of Caritas and its predecessors.
This is part of a series of Masses being held in 2019 to acknowledge and honour all those at national and diocesan level working and praying for justice, peace and development.
Thank you for your support.
Please join us for our ‘Jubilee Year’.
What: 50th Anniversary Mass
Where: St Joseph’s Church,
152 Brougham St, Mount Victoria, Wellington
When: Thursday 27 June, 7pm, followed by refreshments

New Zealand Police - 105 Non Emergency
NZ Police recently launched a new non emergency number, 105. We’ve done this to make it easier to get hold of us in the event of non-urgent situations or ‘Things which have Already Happened’, which don’t require Police assistance immediately.
You can call us on 105 for all non emergencies, or you can go online at
to report things like:
- Lost property
- Theft for a public place or car
- Intentional property damage
- Or to get an update or add info to a previous report
In the event of an emergency, always call 111 - Things that are Happening Now.
