Weekly Update from Bernadette Murfitt
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Special thanks for your commitment in ensuring your child is in their correct school uniform. This is very much appreciated. If you do require support with uniform please don't hesitate to contact me.
Special thanks to all candidates who stood for the Board of Trustees. I look forward to working closely with our new board for the next three years ensuring our school is effectively governed. I would like to acknowledge the commitment, time and energy from Kaye Stirling and Jospeh Mino. Thank you Kaye and Joseph for having a deep appreciation of the needs of all of our learners. You have served our school and have willingly shared your gifts with us so our children benefit.
On Monday at our staff meeting, staff presented an update on their own personal inquiries. This is where a teacher employs a range of strategies over and above normal classroom instruction to accelerate progress for students. It was so impressive to hear the many ways teaching staff are catering for varying needs with classrooms. Our staff are looking forward to sharing with you progress made so far this year in our upcoming cycle of progress reporting on 1 and 2 July.
Arohanui,
Bernadette Murfitt
Principal, Sacred Heart Cathedral School
A BIG THANK YOU to all nine parents who put their names forward as candidates for our school Board of Trustees elections and thank you to all our parents who supported our candidates by voting. Congratulations to the following five parents who have been elected: Kitchie de Guzman, Nigel Ingram, Keiran Kennedy, Nicola Nation and Sera Vatuloka.
We are delighted to warmly welcome our new Board of Trustees and would like to introduce them by sharing information they submitted with their nomination.

Funds raised from the sausage sizzle will be donated to the Heart Foundation.
Mrs Geraghty is looking for a parent to help supervise the Student Council who will be barbequeing sausages. If you are able to help supervise, from 11am-12noon this Friday, please let Mrs Geraghty know email: christine@sacred-heart.school.nz or give Cathy a call on 04 4724047. Thank you.
We are wanting to wrap this up now, so if you still have an entertainment book at home which you do not wish to purchase please send it back to school. One of the Entertainment Book representatives will be giving you a call soon if the entertainment book that was sent home at the beginning of the Term 2 has not yet been returned. Thank you.
Dear God,
You come to us in Jesus who teaches us that the way to happiness is through our love for one another.
Watch over the teachers, students and families of Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we try to be faithful to this teaching.
Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.

MATARIKI
‘The eye’s of the God Tāwhirimātea’
In the beginning at the time of the separation of Ranginui (Sky father) and Papatuanuku (Earth mother), Tāwhirimātea (God of the Winds) became distraught with the fact that his parents had been separated by his siblings. Angry, he gouged his eyes out and threw them into the heavens. Matariki, the cluster of stars, represent the discarded eyes of Tāwhirimātea.
It is this cluster of stars that appear in the month of June that represents the arrival of the Māori New Year. Traditionally, it was a time to remember those that had passed away, this would consist of a Hāngi (Earth Oven Feast) being prepared and shared amongst family, celebrating with Waiata (Songs) and Haka (Posture Dances).
This brought families together during the winter months, and became an opportune time to share the stories of the past, to the children of the future, as a means of retaining the history, revitalising the māori language, and rejoicing in life. The scientific name of this cluster is Pleiades.
