Weekly Update from Bernadette Murfitt
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
This term we have been having class Masses. Special thanks to Father Doug for this initiative. On Friday Room 6 participated in a beautiful thanksgiving Mass around the theme of creation. Throughout the Mass we all reflected on the marvels and wonders of creation and how we can all commit to being good stewards of the earth.

Upcoming events:
On Monday 24 June we are having a special assembly for Clare Smyth as she heads back to Ireland for her wedding. You are most welcome to attend at 1.15pm over at St Mary's College.
We are celebrating Matariki with a community breakfast over at St Mary's College at 8 am on Thursday 27th. We have secured sponsorship for this event and will have lots of breakfast treats available. There will be parking available on the court and our Kapa Haka tutors will be singing with our students. Our "Performance Group" will also perform a bracket during breakfast.
Have a great week.

Pasifika Fono 5 June with Dame Winnie Laban " Walk the talk"
Associate Professor Hon Luamanuvao Dame Winnie Laban spoke to staff, students and whanau about how education is so important and is the building blocks for life long learning. She also talked about how education is all about sharing for all. For children, staff, trustees, parents it is important that we all share and walk the talk.
At the end of the Fono Dame Winnie Laban delivered a heart warming message to our students.
" You are our future, you are our leaders.
Aim high, work hard, have fun and have a can do attitude."
Special thanks to Trudi and Sera who organised this event for us and to all families and students who enjoyed a light meal together.

Dear God,
You come to us in Jesus who teaches us that the way to happiness is through our love for one another.
Watch over the teachers, students and families of Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we try to be faithful to this teaching.
Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.
Philippines Independence Day 12 June
Special thanks to all of our Filipino students who shared their culture with us all by coming to school dressed in traditional Filipino clothing on Independence Day.
On this day in 1898, the Philippines, an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands in the western Pacific Ocean named after Spanish King Philip II, declared independence from Spain after more than 300 years of colonial rule. Today’s Philippines Independence Day, is celebrated across the islands and in Filipino communities all over the world.
A commemorative ceremony takes place each year in Kawit, in the province of Cavite, where the Declaration of Independence was first read by Ambrosio Rianzares Bautista at the home of General Emilio Aguinaldo, now known as the Aguinaldo Shrine. Besides the public reading of this historic document—in the original Spanish as well as in Tagalog—the first flag raising is reenacted.
The flag itself is a powerful symbol of the independence movement: blue representing truth and justice, red symbolizing patriotism, and white standing for equality. The stars at the flag’s corners represent Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, the three main regions of the Philippines. The eight rays surrounding the sun stand for the first eight provinces that battled against Spain.
Independence Day is marked by festive parades particularly in the capital city of Manila that culminates with a speech by the president, followed by a 21-gun salute. Families and friends take advantage of this day as they celebrate 121 years of independence.
" I am proud to be Filipino and being part of a culture that is rich in history." Julianne
" I feel my culture is appreciated by New Zealanders." Larissa

Wellbeing at Sacred Heart Cathedral School
Wellbeing and developing a positive mind-set is really important to us all at Sacred Heart Cathedral School. As a staff we are very committed to preparing our students for future learning. We personalise and differentiate learning to support our students in all aspects of their lives. How our students feel about themselves is paramount to how they engage and experience success. Our staff continue to learn about how we can best support our students with learning and development.
There are many layers to wellbeing:
Social wellbeing includes the extent to which we experience positive relationships and connectedness to others.
Physical wellbeing is associated with how we feel physically and enables positive health outcomes through physical activity and and healthcare.
Emotional wellbeing relates to self awareness and emotional regulation. It also includes how we cope with different challenges and is often associated with resilience. An ability to self reflect is an important part of emotional wellbeing.
Cognitive wellbeing is associated with achievement and success. It incorporates how information is processed and how judgements are made. Motivation and persistence combined deepen knowledge and ensure positive learning.
Spiritual wellbeing is when all positive aspects of spirituality are shown in how we live our lives.
