Dear God,
You come to us in Jesus who teaches us that the way to happiness is through our love for one another.
Watch over the teachers, students and families of Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we try to be faithful to this teaching.
Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.
Weekly Update from Bernadette Murfitt
Kia ora koutou e te whānau,
Welcome to Rafael, Devlin and Garlette who all started school in Room 1, this week (Monday 28th, Tuesday 29th and Wednesday 30th respectively) Welcome to Sacred Heart Cathedral School. You are going to have a wonderful time and will make lifelong friends.
It was a very proud Mr Grevatt yesterday after the Interzone athletics. Our students were pretty incredible and represented our school with pride combined with a determination to do their very best. Special thanks to all the amazing parents that helped us out.
I hope all is going well for whānau as we approach the end of the year. Our students are all continuing with our well-established learning routines. It is hard also to believe that Sunday was the first Sunday of Advent.
I had a fabulous retreat with Catholic Principals' last week. We were very fortunate to have Kathryn Berkitt working with us on emotional regulation.
Please take care of yourself and your whānau. Please reach out to us if we can help in any way.
Arohanui,
Bernadette Murfitt

More than Gold - Movie Review
Intro:
More than Gold is an inspirational true story based on Dame Valerie Adams - her success and her struggles.
Plot:
As we all know, Dame Valerie Adams is a famous shotput athlete. She moved to NZ after being born in Tonga and was bullied because of being 6 foot 4 and wearing size 10 men's shoes.
She started shotput by winning the school athletics competition and then going to compete in bigger competitions. After she lost her Mum, she decided to dedicate her life to shotput and soon after, reached her dream of getting into the Olympics for the first time at the age of 15.
Eventually, she chose to get married and have 2 children. After having her last child she had to go through major surgery where she could have died. She became a famous shotput athlete after winning 2 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze. Soon after she became a Dame!
Themes:
One of the biggest themes in the movie is family. Her family was important to her during her journey. They were always there for her and supported her! Another crucial theme is determination. She never gave up even in times when she felt like she could not go any further. Sport is another theme because she was a junior shotput athlete, Olympic shotput athlete, and competed in the Tokyo Olympics after going through major surgery.
Favourite Part:
My favourite part was when she had won a silver in the Beijing Olympics. She was driving on the road with no one around when she got a call from the Olympic organisers. Valerie was told that the gold medalist had taken drugs which was cheating. She had now won the gold!
Opinion:
My opinion on this story is that if you put a lot of effort in… anything is possible! It is incredible because every time she fell down she picked herself up again and kept going.
Recommendation:
It is an inspirational true story and I would highly recommend this movie to anyone who has a great desire to get to the Olympics! It is a lesson to anyone that even if you go through tough times, you can still succeed.
Emily
InterZone Athletics:
A big well done to all of our children who competed at the Interzone athletics day at Newtown Park. It was great to see our school values on display, with the students encouraging each other and trying their best. It was a very successful day for SHCS with some fantastic results and a number of students advancing to the Regional competition which will be held in Masterton next Tuesday. Ka mau te wehi!
We wish all those children who have made it through to Regional Zone Athletics all the very best. We know you will do our school proud.
