Dear God,
You come to us in Jesus who teaches us that the way to happiness is through our love for one another.
Watch over the teachers, students and families of Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we try to be faithful to this teaching.
Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.
Weekly Update from Bernadette Murfitt
Kia ora koutou e te whānau,
What a busy, wonderful week it was last week. Special thanks to our amazing helpers who accompanied our students on a wide range of activities outside the classroom. Special thanks to the parents who went to camp. Thank you for giving up your time, and for all your energy and encouraging words as the children navigated the camp activities.
Congratulations to Keiffer (Rm 9) who was awarded an academic scholarship to St. Patrick's College, Kilbirnie. Well done Keiffer! We are so proud of you and I know your Mum and Dad are as well.
We have a really positive relationship with St Mary's College with the use of the College courts each day at lunchtime for our students as well as the hall for assembly, liturgy, and mass. Unfortunately, over recent weeks, the staff at St Mary's College have commented about our parents using the Guildford Terrace driveway for pick-ups and drop-offs and some families even parking on the St Mary's College school grounds. The relationship we have with the college is very important to us.
Just a reminder please don't use Guildford Terrace for picks ups or drop-offs. Please park on Hill Street, Molesworth Street, or Hawkestone Street and walk into the school. Please do not park on the College grounds.
I have also been given 3 sets of St Mary's school uniform, size 6 & 8 (women's size 6 & 8) so if your daughter will be attending St Mary's College next year and would fit one of these uniforms, please drop into my office and collect a set.
Shade Sail
We are very excited to see that work has commenced on the installation of a shade sail on our playground.
Staffing Update for 2023:
Ann Stephen has been granted unpaid refreshment leave for the 2023 school year. Ann plans to travel overseas with her husband and explore many parts of the world. We wish Ann all the very best and look forward to her rejoining us for the start of the 2024 school year. Hannah Purser who is currently teaching in the middle syndicate will move to Room 10 to teach the Year 7 and 8s. We look forward to Hannah sharing her many gifts and talents with our older students and Julius and Therese. We will also be welcoming back Clare Hewson who is currently on parental leave to Room 5 next year to teach the Year 3 and 4 students. Many schools are facing challenges around staffing. We are very blessed to have such a dedicated and skillful staff.
“Many will have been inspired by Jesus’ simple but powerful teaching: love God and love your neighbour as yourself- in other words, treat others as you would like them to treat you. His great emphasis was to give spirituality a practical purpose. His simple message of love has been turning the world upside down ever since. He showed that what people are and what they do, does matter and does make a difference.” Queen Elizabeth
Several of our families have suffered the passing of a loved one over the past week. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
Arohanui,
Bernadette Murfitt

Sacred Heart Cathedral School
Thank you so much for all the donations you give to our school.
Please note, our school is not eligible for the government donation scheme that was introduced in 2020, so we really do rely on the generosity of our whānau.
This year, we have used donations to pay for all trips and activities, including ASB and camp, matheletics, reading eggs, and extra staffing to support learners who need a little extra time.
Should you wish to claim back, here is a very informative link from IRD.
Thank you so much to our talented team Ann, Julius, and Therese. Thank you for everything you did behind the scenes to make the camp experience so enjoyable.
Thank you to our Parent helpers. We so appreciate you all taking an annual leave to support our students. I know you all had a wonderful time and had many laughs together.
Thank you to all families who bought raffle tickets, sold raffle tickets, and purchased iceblocks and sausages.
Thank you to those families who paid for others so they could enjoy the camp experience.
Thank you to our students. You all challenged yourselves and managed to be in a new environment, tried different food, helped out in the dining room, managed your belongings and interacted with others.
Thank you, thank you.

Wellington & Kapi Mana Primary and Intermediate Schools Tennis Tournament
Congratulations to the following 3 students, Dishan (Rm 7), Levi (Rm 9) and James (Rm 10), who participated in the Wellington & Kapi Mana Primary and Intermediate Schools tennis tournament at the Renouf Centre today.
Some of our classes have been visiting the Tōku Reo Tōku Ohooho exhibition at the National Library.
What a vision those who signed the petition 50 years ago had for Aotearoa.
Laying Our Wreaths at the British High Commission
On Friday, students stood outside the gates of the High Commission and said their morning Karakia.
The staff appreciated the wreath our students made to acknowledge the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.
29th September (Thursday) - Non-Uniform Day and Last Day of Term
On Thursday, 29th September will be a non-uniform day and the last day of term.
Feast of Saint Lorenzo Ruiz - The First Filipino Saint (Come dressed in your Filipino Attire)
According to last week's newsletter, we will need to reschedule the Feast of Saint Lorenzo Ruiz to 19th October 2022 (please note that this is the third day of term 4) due to the Junior Syndicate having a swimming course on the 18th October.
Saint Lorenzo Ruiz was canonized on the 18th October 1987. We are asking our Filipino students to come dressed wearing something that represents Filipino culture. Our Senior Students will share with the rest of the school information about St Lorenzo Ruiz and the work that he did.

Bricks4Kidz is a STEAM-based, educational programme using Lego to build and learn about the world (while of course, having fun)! The programme came to Wellington at the end of last year, but has run very successfully elsewhere in NZ for many years, after starting in the US.
See our website for further details:
https://www.bricks4kidz.co.nz/wellington-north/

We have also run after-school coding, "introduction to robotics" classes and in-school workshops as part of the technology/science curriculum. We are keen to work with schools across Wellington city to enhance their teaching of STEM subjects in the classroom, and to provide good quality out of school care.
Please contact me, Kathryn Graham (Bricks4Kidz Administrator) on the above email, or 021 02334492 (home phone - leave a text msg with a number & I'll get back to you if no answer.)
