Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, Māori Language Week.
As a celebration of Aotearoa New Zealand’s Indigenous language, Te Wiki o te Reo Māori holds great significance. This year sees the 50th anniversary of the Māori Language petition, which asked for active recognition of te reo Māori in Aotearoa, and for the language to be taught in schools.
The Senior Syndicate went down to the Waterfront and look who they met. Daisy and Tommy from Room 10 have written beautiful pieces about their impressions.
"Tame Iti - I shall not speak Maori"
An impression from Daisy:
Today we got the chance to walk down to the Waterfront and look at Tame Iti’s steel art exhibition. The art was of Maori people and colonial people coming together.
He did it to spread awareness, because back in his day he wasn’t allowed to speak Maori in school. It was remembering that 50 years ago there was a petition presented to parliament about Maori language being valued and used in Aotearoa . We were lucky enough to meet Tame Iti, and talk to him.
It was interesting learning about the bell that represented being called into places, like school, church and a Marae. He was very passionate about his culture. It was great to meet Tame Iti. He sung us a Waiata and we sung a Waiata to him. It was special to see and learn about his culture.
It was sad to think about all the things Tame Iti went through. His first language was Maori and he was forced to speak a language he hardly knew. I felt inspired by his story and intrigued to learn about his story. Daisy
An impression from Tommy:
This morning the senior syndicate walked down to the waterfront where we met Tame Iti.- A New Zealand activist who loves to express his culture.
But back in his day speaking Maori was not allowed. Tame Ite didn’t like the idea of his culture being put down so he spoke his language and got told off which meant he had to write ‘I Will Not speak Maori’ a thousand times.
But even after that Tame Iti still spoke Maori and even to this day he still talks about his culture to everyone. While we were there we got to admire all of his artwork made out of steel. The artwork was amazing, there were statues of Maori people and there were colonial statues everywhere, some had axes and even spears. There was also a bell to symbolize his old school. We even got to talk to him. He sang us his waiata and told us a little bit about his childhood.
To me, I really appreciate him because he brought back Maori culture, and what people had to go through back in the day. Tommy
We had a beautiful Father's Day Liturgy last Friday to celebrate all the wonderful contributions Dads, Uncles, Grandads, and significant male adults have impacted on our students. Thank you to all who attended and who worked behind the scenes preparing the morning tea. Special mention again to our amazing staff who had the vision and prepared the students to honour those who attended our Liturgy. As a school we are loving our face-to-face get-togethers again, We are feeling reenergized and re-invigorated as we slowly return to normal.
Camp 2022 at Kaitoke
Ann, Therese, Julius, left this morning with all the campers for Kaitoke. We are so grateful to the parent helpers who have taken time out from work to support the children in the wonderful outdoor environment at the bottom of the Remutukas . We rescheduled our camp from the beginning of the year when Omicron was knocking at the door. I really want to thank our beautiful Sacred Heart Community for the way everyone got in behind the fundraising and supported reducing the camp cost. Thank you to those families who paid for others to attend camp. Blessings to you.
Thank you to our Pasifika families for giving us ideas as to how we can provide a rich curriculum for our tamariki.
Have a wonderful week.
