Watch over the teachers, students and families of Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we try to be faithful to this teaching.
Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,

Weekly Update from Bernadette Murfitt
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Mālō e lelei.
This week as a school, we are celebrating Tongan Language week and Social Justice week. To those families who are of Tongan descent, we wish you a wonderful week of celebration.
This year’s theme for Uike Kātoanga’i ‘o e lea faka-Tonga - Tonga Language Week - is:Ke Tu'uloa 'a e lea faka-Tonga 'i Aotearoa, which means Sustaining the Tonga Language in Aotearoa.
Social Justice Week 2022 focuses on the topic of racism. WHAKAKĀHORETIA TE KAIKIRI. KOTAHI ANŌ TĀTOU I ROTO I TE KARAITI / SAY NO TO RACISM. WE ARE ONE IN CHRIST. As we journey through this Social Justice Week the key question for each of us to reflect on is: “how are we becoming one in Christ?”
Welcome to Nikolai, who started in Room 1 on Monday. Nikolai has siblings at our school already and we are sure that during your time at Sacred Heart Cathedral School, you will make lifelong friends.
Deputy Principal 2023
The Sacred Heart Cathedral School Board appointed Mr Julius Solia as Deputy Principal, starting at the beginning of the 2023 school year. We look forward to supporting Julius in his new role at our school. We are also grateful to Miss Cranney who has acted as Deputy Principal this year while we recruited for a permanent Deputy Principal and to Mrs. Woodbury and Mrs. Stephen who have all taken on additional duties throughout the 2022 school year. We are so fortunate at Sacred Heart Cathedral School with our team who are all so committed to our school and ensuring our students receive the very best.
Next week, 12-18th September is Māori Language Week. As a school, we are committed to helping to ensure we celebrate and grow in te reo. Let’s celebrate our beautiful te reo language and challenge ourselves to use te reo in our everyday interactions.
Wishing you all a fabulous week. Just a quick reminder that term 3 ends on Thursday, 29th September as staff have an accord day on Friday.
Ofa ke ke ma'u ha 'aho fiefia.
(May you have a cheerful day.)
Arohanui,
Bernadette Murfitt

Exciting News – Outdoor Canopy!
Kia ora koutou.
We are very excited to announce that a significant building project has been approved by the Archdiocese and work will commence shortly on the building of an outdoor canopy.
As you will know, because we do not have a school hall, we are reliant on the use of St Mary’s Hall and Connolly Hall (which does not have the capacity for the whole school) for things like Kapa Haka, liturgies etc.
The canopy will allow for whole school gatherings in most weather (apart from on the windiest/wettest days!), outdoor play space on drizzly days, and an outdoor learning space.
With many thanks to Bernadette for having the vision for this outdoor space a number of years ago and to the Archdiocese for helping us to get approval for this project using the Essential Property Maintenance Package.
We hope that the canopy will be built and ready to use by the start of term 4.
Ngā mihi nui,
Suzanne Adair
Father's Day Liturgy on Friday 9th September at 9:00am

We look forward to seeing you there.
We have Sosaia (Rm 2) sharing his knowledge about Tonga and Rm 1 made beautiful artwork.

Petihana Reo Māori 50th Anniversary Events
A national commemorative event to mark the 50th anniversary of the Māori language petition (Te Petihana) being presented will be held at Parliament on 14 September.
Māori Development Minister Willie Jackson says the public event recognises the te reo Māori champions behind Te Petihana in 1972 and how their bravery and work ignited the Māori language movement.
“Rangatahi from Ngā Tamatoa, Te Reo Māori Society and Te Huinga Rangatahi, supported by kaumātua, presented over 30,000 signatures calling for te reo Māori to be taught in all schools. This was a pivotal moment in our country’s history and deserves recognition,” Willie Jackson said.
“It may be hard for some people to believe but 50 years ago te reo Māori was in grave danger of dying out.
“There were no kōhanga reo, kura kaupapa, wānanga, Māori media or much Māori used anywhere outside of rural Māori communities. Te Reo Māori wasn’t even an official language.
“We have made great progress to revitalise and embed te reo Māori into our daily lives. We have Māori in our schools, and Māori Language Day became Māori language week that over a million New Zealanders celebrate each year.
The national commemoration event will be held at Parliament on 14 September from 11:30am to 1:00pm and include formal speeches, live music, free kai and a shared Māori language moment at midday. Those who can’t attend can watch the commemoration event via Whakaata Māori livestream.
A Māori Language Petition 50th Anniversary Exhibition at Te Puna Foundation Gallery, National Library will open on Wednesday 14 September until 3 December 2022.
