Watch over the teachers, students and families of Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we try to be faithful to this teaching.
Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,

Weekly Update from Bernadette Murfitt
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Kia orana,
A very special welcome to Mazen and Dougal who have joined our school community. We are so delighted to have you at Sacred Heart Cathedral School. You will love your time learning here and will make lifelong friends.
This year’s theme for ‘Epetoma o te reo Māori Kūki ‘Āirani – Cook Islands Language Week is ‘Ātuitui’ia au ki te Oneone o tōku ‘Ui Tupuna which means, connect me to the soil of my ancestors.
‘Ātuitui’ia au ki te Oneone o tōku ‘Ui Tupuna reflects on the journey of Cook Islands peoples in New Zealand, as well as the longing of young Cook Islanders to connect with their language, culture, and identity. Acknowledging that while community elders are fundamental to the teaching and sharing of Cook Islands language, the leadership of young people as the next wave of cultural and language experts is also critical in keeping the connection to their homelands alive.
To all those families at our school of Cook Island descent, we wish you a very special week of celebration and thank you for sharing your culture with us.
Thank you - Ngā mihi
Thank you to our wonderful volunteers that help us out with sports coaching and management. Your skills are truly appreciated. We know sport is such an important part of a person's wellbeing and resilience and we as a school, we are so grateful to our parents who give their precious time to support others.
The Commonwealth Games have exposed what hard work can do when you are super passionate about a sport. Our Kiwi athletes have been involved in many medal ceremonies so far.
Arohanui,

Sacred Heart Cathedral School
Our new mural outside Room 3 was officially blessed today. The blessing involved a karanga led by senior students, karakia, mihi, and a blessing from Fr Alliston.
Thank you to Whaea Katarina and Declan for your tautoko in leading us through this. Ngā mihi nui ki a korua.
A reflection from the artist Jesse Harte on the meaning of the mural outside Room 3.
This piece has a close connection for myself and artist, Pita Pekepō as we have used the image of Pita's mother as the central figure of this work and Pita himself as the pēpi she carries. She has been the maternal figure for Pita of course, but also played a great motherly figure throughout my own childhood. Pita and I have been the closest of friends from a young age, which allowed us to put emotional depth within the art. I was asked to reflect an image of mother Mary with connection to Aotearoa and I was instantly drawn to Hine Pekepō to represent this holy mother figure. Further, we have featured the now extinct sacred bird of Aotearoa, the Huia. This is purposely the female species of the bird with the extended curved beak, this, in turn, continues to carry on the matriarchal theme of the piece.

Grandparents Liturgy on 25th August at 1.20pm St Mary's College Hall
We will be celebrating the wonderful influence Grandparents have in the lives of our students. There will be a liturgy for our Grandparents on 25th August at 1.20pm, St Mary's College Hall.
Parking will be available on the school court from 1pm.
Lord God almighty, bless our grandparents with long life, happiness, and health. May they remain constant in your love and be living signs of your presence to their children and grandchildren. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Seasons for Growth
Change and loss are issues that affect all of us at some stage in our lives. At Sacred Heart Cathedral School we recognise that when significant changes occur in our lives, young people may benefit from learning how to manage these changes effectively.
We are therefore offering a very successful education program called Seasons for Growth which will commence in Term 3. This program is facilitated in small groups and is based on research that highlights the importance of social support and the need to practice new skills to cope effectively with change and loss. The program focuses on issues such as self-esteem, managing feelings, problem-solving, decision-making, effective communication, and support networks.
If you think your son or daughter would benefit from Seasons for Growth, we would encourage you to talk to him/her about participating in the program.
If you would like to enroll your child or require further information, please contact John Grevatt - John@sacred-heart.school.nz

The sun was shining and we had so much fun.
Thank you again to the Whitaker family who entered our school in the competition.

The Ned Show was beamed in via zoom on Tuesday afternoon.
This presentation helps to build a positive mindset.
As you know we recently hosted an all school live stream event called NED’s Mindset Mission. We trust your student was encouraged by the show which taught about having a positive Mindset for learning and life!
Mindset Mission yo-yos are still available for purchase at school to support the free show and message. If your student has already purchased a yoyo, here is an important link to help them get off to a good start with proper string length adjustment, click here.
Additionally, here are a couple of our favorite follow up home resources from the Mindset Mission website. You may want to use these with your child as they are designed to go hand in hand with the programme.
NED Coloring Face Masks
Parent Encouragement Notes
If you'd like additional resources, they are available here.
And don’t forget to ask your student what they learned in the show about having a growth mindset from YET the Yeti, Captain Kindly and during NED’s visit on the spaceship!
Educating together!
