Dear God,
You come to us in Jesus who teaches us that the way to happiness is through our love for one another.
Watch over the teachers, students and families of Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we try to be faithful to this teaching.
Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.
Weekly Update from Bernadette Murfitt
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Welcome to Sophia who started at our school in Room 1, last Wednesday. Sophia you are going to have a wonderful time at Sacred Heart Cathedral School and will make lifelong friends.
At Sacred Heart Cathedral School we have zero tolerance for anyone who bullies. Every day, we are reminding and teaching our students what they can do if peers are mean face to face or online. This Friday is Pink Shirt Day and this is another way that we can collectively stand up to bullies.
Welcome to our ex-students who shared with Mr Murray about life at St Mary’s College.
St Pat's College visiting with ex-Sacred Heart Cathedral School students.
We have a number of positive cases (again) within the school community. Be aware of the possible symptoms. Stay home if unwell.
We are strongly encouraging mask-wearing by students in Rooms 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 as it is another layer of protection. Whānau you are welcome to come through the gate. Please wear a mask so we can all keep safe. Please note only a few staff have had COVID so we are all trying to keep well.
Please make sure your child is in the correct school uniform and has their own green tie. Special thanks to all those families who are ensuring their child has the correct Sacred Heart Cathedral School uniform. We have a large amount of second-hand uniforms that you are welcome to browse through and take.
Enjoy the rest of the week.

WHAT IS MATARIKI?
Matariki is a cluster (group) of stars that set during May/June, and rise during June/July annually. The rising of the Matariki star cluster signifies the Māori new year, a time to celebrate new lives, and those who have passed on, with kai (food), waiata (song), and haka (dance), a time for reflection, planning, and coming together as a whānau. Māori tūpuna (ancestors) look to Matariki to time preservation of crops for winter, and to predict the success of the coming year’s harvest.
During Matariki rising, nine stars (from the Matariki star cluster) can be seen from Earth just before dawn without a telescope.
Te Iwa o Matariki are:
-
Matariki – signifies reflection, hope and our connection to the environment.
-
Pōhutukawa – connects with those who have passed on.
-
Waitī – ties to bodies of fresh water and the food within it.
-
Waitā – ties to the ocean and the food within it.
-
Waipuna-ā-rangi – associated with the rain.
-
Tupuānuku – is for food that grows within the soil.
-
Tupuārangi – is for food that grows up in the trees.
-
Ururangi – is the star associated with the winds.
-
Hiwa-i-te-rangi – the youngest, is the wishing star that also ties into our aspirations for the coming year.
Please note school is not open on the following dates:
- Friday, 3rd June - this is an accord day and is attached to Queens Birthday weekend.
- Term 2 ends on Thursday, 7 July.

Zero Water Room 6
We have had the Zero Waste team from the Wellington City Council at school over the past two weeks. They are teaching us about how we can care for the environment with Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
Waitī (Room 6) also worked on some persuasive Letters to the Editor to convince people to care for the Earth.
Here is Ethan’s
Dear Editor,
It makes me sad that we humans are destroying animal habitats and the earth.
Firstly there is a gigantic hole in the ozone layer. This is bad because it is easier to get sunburnt. The reason there is a hole is because of smoke and air pollution.
Secondly there are too many trees being cut down. Trees provide us oxygen in exchange for CO2, but we cut trees down for paper which means less oxygen!
If your Preschooler is turning 5 in 2023 or you have a child who wishes to come to Sacred Heart Cathedral School, please complete an enrolment form. This is available on our school website: www.sacred-heart.school.nz.
Crystal from Room 1, has lost her new school tie. It is not named and size small. If you find this please return to Room 1. Thank you.
Taitum from Room 9 has lost his named jersey. If found please please return it to Room 9. Thank you.

Caution Over the Flu Season is Very Important in 2022
As noted on the Ministry of Health website:
- We've had very little influenza circulating in our communities since the pandemic began. This means our community immunity is lower than usual.
- This winter there is the very real possibility of having flu and COVID-19 within a short space of time – this can lead to very serious illness.
- If you do catch flu, it’s important that you stay away from work or school while you’re unwell. Look after yourself and your family – rest and fluids are especially important.
- The symptoms of influenza can be the same or similar to the symptoms of COVID-19.
- If you’re sick, stay home. Call your health provider or Healthline and follow their advice. They may advise you to have a COVID-19 test, and self-isolate while you wait for the results.
- It’s also important to seek medical advice early if you are concerned, and especially if there are any danger signs, even if you have been seen before. Other serious conditions can also look like the flu, including meningococcal disease.
