Dear God,
You come to us in Jesus who teaches us that the way to happiness is through our love for one another.
Watch over the teachers, students and families of Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we try to be faithful to this teaching.
Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.
Weekly Update from Bernadette Murfitt
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
A special welcome to Bailey, a new entrant who started in Room 1 on Monday and Sienna in Room 8, who has re-joined our school after leaving us 4 years ago. You are both going to love being part of our wonderful school community.
Special thanks to our amazing staff and parent helpers who are walking our children to and from school from the station. It is much appreciated. Please email Cathy at office@sacred-heart.school.nz should you wish to help out and go on the roster.
Please avoid Hill Street Pick up and drop off will be at St Mary's College courts off Hawkestone Street, access via ramp just past the main driveway to St Mary's. (We are so grateful to St Mary's College for their generosity.)
Any children coming by bus/train, please meet us at the safe meeting place inside the station.
The schools in Thorndon are having a daily meeting with the Police and the Ministry of Education. We have excellent systems and processes in place and we are being responsive to any changes that may be required.
This Friday is Mufti Day - please bring a little something for the Easter raffle.
Please take care and keep well. Please contact me if you have any concerns.
Arohanui,
Bernadette Murfitt
Principal
Sacred Heart Cathedral School
The following was emailed out to all our parents earlier this afternoon.
Important Update 23/02/2022
Kia ora koutou.
As you are all aware, we have been keeping a close eye on developments with the protestors around Parliament with daily meetings with the NZ Police and Ministry of Education as well as the other schools in Thorndon.
You will have seen that Wellington Girls’ College has moved to online learning from today. We have now been advised that St Mary’s College will be moving to online learning from tomorrow until Monday, 27th February (inclusive). St Mary’s College will remain open for supervision for those under 14 years old. Due to this, we will continue to have access to Sacred Heart Cathedral School via Hawkestone St with parking for drop off and pick up at St Mary’s College.
Our board met last night and agreed that:
- Sacred Heart Cathedral School will remain open while we can access our school via St Mary’s College.
- Should St Mary’s College close its physical site or if the protest situation changes, we will promptly reassess and will not hesitate to move to online learning.
- We will reconvene on Sunday to reassess the situation and we will be in touch after that meeting.
- After school care will continue as normal.
In reaching this decision, the Board considered the following:
- We are meeting with NZ Police and the Ministry of Education daily to assess the situation;
- The Board is undertaking risk assessments and reassessing these regularly;
- We have been operating a safe passage to and from the station with parent volunteers and staff and our route has been confirmed as a safe route by NZ Police. We assess the route each day.
- We have security guards onsite as well as a Police presence on the neighbouring streets.
- Our students are onsite for the whole school day.
- Our Board are meeting regularly and assessing staff sentiment on a daily basis.
The health, safety and wellbeing of our staff and students is paramount and we consider at this stage our safety processes are strong and robust.
We understand that you may have queries about this decision. Please contact Bernadette or Suzanne Adair (Presiding Member of the SHCS Board of Trustees, 021 039 7558).
Keep well and keep safe.
Bernadette and Suzanne
Positive Parenting During COVID
The Ministry of Education has put together the following information which may be helpful.
Positive parenting during COVID-19:
To support mental health, resilience and emotional wellbeing for our tamariki and rangatahi, the Ministry of Health has partnered with Whāraurau to offer parents, whānau and caregivers free online versions of the Triple P: Positive Parenting Programme across the country.
Find out more about Triple P and register for programmes.
There are three free Triple P online programmes available to help positively support children to reduce anxiety, build emotional resilience and life skills and cope with challenges:
- Fear-Less Triple P Online – for parents and caregivers of children and teenagers (aged six to 14 years) who have significant anxiety.
- Triple P Online – for parents with toddlers to 12-year-olds.
- Teen Triple P Online – for parents with ‘tweens’ or teenagers aged 10 to 16 years.
These programmes will also provide whānau a toolkit to help them to guide behaviour positively and encourage children’s learning.
The school has just received students' certificates from ICAS exams which were taken last year.
Congratulations to the following children:
