Dear God,
You come to us in Jesus who teaches us that the way to happiness is through our love for one another.
Watch over the teachers, students and families of Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we try to be faithful to this teaching.
Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.

I came across a beautiful reflection about Grace, very relevant for us all.

In our community there are many who are immune-compromised, are ill or have other vulnerabilities, even when they are fully vaccinated, they could be more affected by Omicron. As a result, we are all obligated to play our part to minimise the spread of the virus.
Covid-19, particularly the Omricon variant is particularly transmissable by airborne transmission. Most people who get COVID-19 will have a mild to moderate illness and will fully recover in their own home. However, this is not necessarily the case for everyone.
Masks help to prevent transmission of the virus that causes COVID-19 in two ways:
- decreasing the amount of virus spread by an infectious person by catching the particles containing virus in the mask (source control).
- helping to prevent a person from inhaling particles containing virus (wearer protection).
Therefore, while we are at red, staff and students (Year 4 and above) are required to wear masks when inside at school (and on school transport). Students in Year 1-3 are welcome but not required to wear a mask. I have also asked that the Year 3 students in Room 5 which is a Year 3 and 4 composite class also wear a mask. Thank you in advance.
Public health advice is that an appropriate mask will fit snugly and seal well around facial contours. You may even want your child to wear a fabric mask over a medical mask so it fits snugly. The omicron variant is more likely to be transmitted by breath than contact with surfaces – hence the focus on mask-wearing, distancing, and having good airflow in classrooms.
We will provide a plastic bag for students to store their masks in when they are heading outdoors. It would be worthwhile for students to name masks (whether disposable or reusable).
Exemptions for mask-wearing can be obtained. We ask that this be done via official channels. In the first instance, we recommend talking to your GP.
On one level, wearing masks when indoors can be compared to the need to wear a sunhat when outdoors. Yet there is one major difference. If you choose not to wear a sunhat, it is that individual that has to suffer the consequences. If you choose not to wear a mask it may be everyone else in the room and their close contacts who have to suffer the consequences. With this in mind, we encourage you to have robust conversation with your child/children about the responsibility of wearing a mask.
Please be assured that during each school day teachers will find as many opportunities for small groups, or the entire class to work outdoors. When outdoors and physically distanced, students can remove their masks. This includes PE, sport and breaktimes.
A few extra things to consider:
- Name masks!
- Pack a jersey or cardigan each day, increased natural ventilation and extra time outdoors may mean things are sometimes a little cooler than expected!
- Students will require a refillable drink bottle for water
- If you have any specific fears or concerns, please raise them with us as soon as possible!
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
We are asking all parents to please complete the from below for each of your children by clicking on the link. This will make it simplier for parents to update in subsequent years.
We appreciate the time that you have taken to complete this form for us.
The school uses SchoolAppsNZ to communicate with parents. A reminder to all parents who have already downloaded this app to go to the 'Alerts' and update the groups that you subscribe to as your child's classroom and year level will have changed.
For parents new to our school, please download SchoolAppsNZ, (free to download) from Google Play (Android mobiles) or App Store (iPhones).
Once downloaded onto your device, select 'Alerts' and then click on the tick on the upper right corner which shows groups with drop down arrow - please select the relevant groups for your child. The school uses this app to send out reminders and to communicate with our parents in the event of an emergency. If you have any problems downloading this app, please let me know.
Subway lunches can be ordered online each Wednesday before 9.00am. The subway lunches will be dropped off at school before lunchtime. Instructions on how to order are in the flyer below.
Hard copy packs will come home tomorrow - only to be used when and if school is closed

Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon
The Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon will be held at Kilbirnie Park on 27 March 2022.
It is designed for Kiwi kids aged 7-15 years to help them stay active and healthy through a programme of participation. Participants get to swim, cycle, and run their way around age appropriate courses, either as an individual or as part of a team of two.
This is always a popular event for Sacred Heart children and once again in 2022 we have registered a school group. By registering as a school we go in the draw to win prizes for our school. If you are planning on registering your child for the 2022 TRYathlon, please register via our school group link using my details as the school coordinator (Suzanne Adair, suzanneadair@hotmail.com):
