Dear God,
You come to us in Jesus who teaches us that the way to happiness is through our love for one another.
Watch over the teachers, students and families of Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we try to be faithful to this teaching.
Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.

Weekly Update from Bernadette Murfitt
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
The year has gone in a flash and we are so grateful to Christine, Jane, and Eli for all their contributions over the years. Christine has supported learners here at Sacred Heart Cathedral School for 38 years, Jane for 25 years, and Eli for 19 years. Tomorrow, 09 December, we will have a special liturgy to celebrate the legacy of these three outstanding teachers. You are welcome to join us through zoom at 9.30am.
Join Zoom Meeting https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83260682722?pwd=dzR0VHdnVHF3K1pUYXpKS21OYTQ0dz09 Meeting ID: 832 6068 2722 Passcode: FFM7ky
To: Christine, Jane and Eli,
It is education that allows people to change their minds about what they think. The best education starts with what people know and takes them on a journey of discovery. If we change what people know, then we change what people think. It is as simple and as powerful as that.
What a legacy the three of you have left. Savour, reflect and be proud of what you have achieved.
To our Year 8 students who are leaving Sacred Heart Cathedral School to start life at college, thank you for all the magnificent contributions you have made to our school over the years. Please come back and visit us Lila A., Lily, Iliana, Lachlan, Bianca, Anika, Max, Charlie, Sophie C., Flynn, Kerys, Sabina, Claudia, Ryder, Kezia, Adrielle, Marsy, Irene, Ashleigh, Tim, Liaiina, Harley, Sophie M., Daniel, Maia, Adam, Charlotte, Steven, Kymani, Carlos, William, Ahena, Owen, Laika, Harmony, Olipilisi, Aloema, Dion, Lila W., Rupert and Taylah.
To those students who are leaving our school for other reasons, best wishes for your schooling.
Special thanks to our amazing families who are moving on from Sacred Heart Cathedral School. Thank you for the unique way you have supported learning at Sacred Heart Cathedral School.
Special thanks to Trudy from our Board, who is leaving us to live in Samoa for the next couple of years. Trudy has made significant contributions to our school at the governance level. Trudy has also been instrumental in being our school netball delegate and supporting our Pasifika families. Trudy, you have left a wonderful legacy that we will continue to build upon. Blessings to you and your family.
May you always have work for your hands to do.
May your pockets always hold a coin or two.
May the sun shine brightly upon your windowpane.
May a rainbow follow each rain.
And may the hand of a friend always be near you.
As we navigate the closing weeks of 2021, it is helpful to remind ourselves that good can and will come out of hardships. We need to hold onto the hope that in the future things will be better and we can be better people as a result of the difficult road we are currently journeying. As well as holding onto hope for the future, my personal challenge is to try to not be in such a hurry so I do notice the beauty of the things around me.
See you on 2nd February 2022, which is the first day of school.
Arohanui,
Bernadette Murfitt
Principal
Sacred Heart Cathedral School
Even though we are in the orange level of the traffic light system, schools as instructed by the public health order will still operate until the end of 2021.
This year, our End of Year Mass will only be open to Year 8 families (2 per family).

As a staff, we really appreciate all the support you have given us as we have had to change and modify many of our activities.
At the end of our Mass, we will email out the Powerpoint and there will be videos of the speeches included.
I will also send a zoom link on Monday morning for Mass should you wish to join us at 1 PM.
Congratulations to Pierre Rm 7, who competed in the Wellington InterClub Athletics in the 9s Grade (he was competing against all the Wellington Athletics clubs) and he placed for every event. Well done Pierre, what an achievement to have placed first in 4 events and second in another!

Yesterday, we went on a Year 7 retreat in Johnsonville where we learnt about leadership and how to be a good Year 8 next year. We learnt about communication and how to work with others. In our first activity, we had to make a square using rope. It was actually pretty hard but they said we made an 80 percent square. We also had to do it blind folded and one person told us what to do.
We did a lot of other activities that were really fun. What I enjoyed the most, was making the square. The hard bit was the listening and the communication. There were also one or two people who were a bit annoying and silly which was hard to deal with, but we got through it.
The thing I got out of it is how to deal with people well and how to find the balance between talking and listening. I think I have learnt a lot in the retreat. A tip for other students is to just listen to your instructions and it will seem a lot easier.

Retreat Reflection
On The 2nd of December, we went to a church in Johnsonville. We did skills like cooperation and communication with others. We also played a few games like human knot and Jockey up jockey down. We also played a game where you would get a rope, you would make a square blindfolded and you would have to do teamwork to make a square. We also had to do more teamwork because we were playing a game of charades and we had to make what you would find in a kitchen and a laundry. It was very fun to do.
I enjoyed going to the park and playing with my friends. I also really enjoyed the knot game where you would be in your group and you would be in a knot with your hands and you try and get out. It was very challenging but fun.
What I found hard was playing the square game where you would be blindfolded and you would have to make a square with the rope and you have to do teamwork to solve the square. Other than that, I didn't find anything else hard.
I found out that being a leader involves responsibility, caring and helping others and coming up with amazing ideas and sharing ideas and always listening to others.
A tip I got from the helpers was to never give up and always keep trying hard.

Listen, Learn and Communicate.
On Thursday, the Year 7’s had a retreat where we got to learn leadership skills. We boarded the bus soon after school started to go to Johnsonville where we played games that revolved around communicating to your group. The games did not require us to be athletic or energetic, they were games that help us listen to each other and to order people around. It was an exciting experience due to being able to talk a lot without being told off.
I enjoyed the human Lego game because we all got pretty creative. My group even ended up winning one of the rounds! The challenging part was the shape game where you had to arrange the rope into a certain shape. Though it wasn’t that difficult, it got hard when we were forced to put on blindfolds and only a single person was able to lead us.
At the end of the day, I learned that the most important part of being a leader is not giving orders, it’s having the ability to listen well to others. My tip for others is, the way you can be a leader is being able to sort and listen to everyone in a short matter of time without everyone talking.

Harry James Hewson has Arrived
Little Harry James Hewson entered the world at 4am on 7 December at 3.65kg so a really good size.
Blessings to Clare and Johnny, a very proud Mum and Dad.
Congratulations to all the students who participated in our piano concert!
We held our end of year piano concert in St Andrew's Church on 26 November, which was a huge success.
We were proud of our 59 talented pianists who all performed excellently, even the little beginners. The children worked hard to prepare for this concert and it was a great opportunity for our little performers to showcase their talent in music and to be applauded for their performance.
2021 was a tough year for our community affected by COVID-19. However, it has been a good year for our piano studio. Many of our students passed the London Trinity College Music Exams with distinguishing grades. I was so proud of their endeavour and achievements. And also many other students will participate in the end of year exams. I wish all of them all the very best and am sure they will all do themselves proud.
Our studio aims to provide high-quality piano teaching from young beginners through to advanced students. To improve our students' confidence and help them to get more practice performance experience, our studio usually holds piano concerts twice a year. We welcome new students to come and join us if they enjoy music and love to play the piano.
Best regards,
Yating
