Dear God,
You come to us in Jesus who teaches us that the way to happiness is through our love for one another.
Watch over the teachers, students and families of Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we try to be faithful to this teaching.
Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.

Weekly Update from Bernadette Murfitt
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Reminder this Thursday tomorrow - Mufti for afternoon Dance and Disco party here at school.
Mufti Friday - bring a little something for our Christmas raffle - see ideas later on in the newsletter.
Mrs Hewson left us on Friday as she prepares for the arrival of her baby. We look forward to sharing with you when Baby Hewson arrives. Special thanks to Mrs Stewart who will be teaching in Room 5 until the end of the year.
Our school participated in Shake Out, a New Zealand event. Staff talked to students about being prepared for an earthquake within our school and in the playground.
Thank you! Thank You!
$479.00 was raised for the Cathedral Parish at our recent market day. It was such a joy to see our senior students organising such fun games for our students to play. There was light rain but it certainly didn't dampen spirits. The Parish were so appeciative of the generous donation.

On our Liturgical calendar, we have celebrated All Saints Day on 1 November and All Souls Day on 2 November.
ALL SAINTS
by Brian Wren
All saints? How can it be?
Can it be me, holy and good,
walking with God?
How can we say that we're all saints?
O that we could!
Some Saints touch the divine,
and as they shine, candles at night, holy and bright,
gladden the spirits of all saints,
giving us light.
All saints stumble and fall.
God, loving all, knowing our shame,
longs to reclaim:
standing or falling we're all saints.
Treasure the name!
Come, saints, crowds who have gone
beckon us on, hindrances shed,
joy in our tread,
one in the Spirit with all saints,
looking ahead.
Arohanui,
Bernadette Murfitt

Mandatory Vaccination Public Health Order
We are in the process of digesting the new COVID-19 Public Health Response Order for Mandatory Vaccinations for Education which came into effect at 11.59pm on Monday 25 October. Clearly there are implications for school life, and it is going to take some time to appreciate what all of these are. A school like ours is highly dependent on the support of parents and the community, and this is something that we appreciate a great deal.
The advice that we have received from the Ministry of Education is that everyone who works or volunteers for a school who may have contact with children or students, or will be present at a time when children and students are also present must have had a first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine by 15 November 2021 and be fully vaccinated by 1 January 2022.
This also applies to:
* principals
* teachers
* relief teachers and casual staff
* afterschool care workers
* administration staff
* caretakers and cleaners
* contractors and other tradespeople (if on site when children are around)
The vaccination requirements apply wherever in person schooling occurs, such as on the school site, but also at school camps, swimming pools, museums, or where other education outside the classroom (EOTC) programmes take place.
This means that we can only allow people to help at school events with children if they have had at least their first dose by 15 November 2021, and are fully vaccinated by 1 January 2022.
If you wish to be involved as a helper in any events after 15 November, please email through or pop by school with evidence of your vaccination/s before that date. When school starts next year, we will need evidence of full vaccination by 1 January 2022 for any school helpers (or evidence of exemption). Your vaccination status information will enable us to know the vaccination status of our volunteers and helpers to ensure we comply with the Order.
It is important that we keep your vaccination information safe and secure. We will confidentially collect and store your information in our Vaccination Register in our school database. Only authorised staff will have access to the Vaccination Register, and access to the information in the Vaccination Register will only be for authorised purposes.
Under the Privacy Act, you have the right to request a copy of, and correction to, any personal information held by us. You can do this by emailing office @sacred-heart.school.nz or calling 04 47204047.
Please also remember that we are still at Alert Level 2. Pick up and drop off is at the gate. If you do come into school please wear a mask, scan our QR code and adhere to public health measures with social distancing.
I realise that there will be plenty of questions, and it is likely that we will not have answers right away. All schools are in the same boat and working through various situations and scenarios.
Thanks very much for your understanding and support.
Our disco/’Play to Music’ will be slightly different to the normal way we do things. Our priority is always keeping safe as a school community.
Tomorrow, Thursday, 4th November - this will be a free mufti day and we will host the disco here at school, during school hours. Weather permitting, we will have it outside.

Sacred Heart Ferns - What a Season!
The SHCS Ferns had an amazing season – individually they brought all their skills together and created the undefeated Ferns! Over the whole season they scored 319 goals but only had 70 goals scored against them, never losing a game. This end result shows how strong they worked as a team in both defence, limiting the number of goals the other team got, and attack, increasing the number of goals they got. It came down to working as a team, Together Everyone Achieves More!
The team was made up of
- Isla who unfortunately was unable to finish the season with us.
- Oli was our fabulous sub that always filled in when we needed her and then took Isla's place, and has fabulous netball skills.
- Bree who has great intercepts and can stick to her partner like glue.
- Sophie who has grown and become a more confident player, improving her skills each week.
- Bri a feisty mid court player who moves fast through the court.
- Lila a strong passionate player who is equally good in attack and defence.
- Maia our most accurate dedicated shooter, incredible consistency. Maia received a special award at out mini prizegiving for being a Star Shooter.
- Blossom’s improvement throughout the season was awesome to watch, she is a really good mid court player. Blossom was awarded the most improved player for the season.
- Bianca was our dynamic centre who was everywhere she needed to be, hunting out the ball, throwing into gaps, trusting her team mates, always being available at the side of the circle. A calm but yet assertive player and for all these reasons and more Bianca was awarded the most valuable player of the season!
Coach: Michelle Ablett
I thought I’d just share a great short video that shows the strength this team grew too over the season.
At the start of the season, you could hardly hear their cheer as they were about to go back onto the court and by the end of the season you could hear them across the entire MK netball venue.
They are a good mix of your senior syndicate who really came together to make this strong team.
So proud of these girls on many levels and will miss not spending time with them all every weekend.
Coach: Bernie Huynen

Sunhats can be purchased at school for $15.00.
Please ensure your child has a sunhat as this is part of our school uniform requirement during Terms 1 and 4. The school has a 'no hat, no play' policy.
Mufti Day and Hampers for Christmas
Jingle, jingle, jingle…you can hear my sleigh bells ring….
Yes, it’s that time again. Another Christmas rolls round and so it goes, our 2021 Christmas season mufti day is upon us and with it our annual call out for Christmas hamper contributions.
On mufti day this Friday, we’ll ask all students to bring an item towards a hamper which the school can then raffle off to raise money. Best of all, you’ll all get an opportunity to win one of these fantastic hampers.
We’ll send home to each family a small book of five raffle tickets with each ticket worth $2. You can sell them to friends, family or you might choose to up your odds on winning one of these goodies by buying the lot. We ask that each family sends the money and ticket butts back to school by Friday, 26 November. Also, please include any unsold tickets in your returned envelope. We’ll draw the winning ticket the following week, announcing winners on Wednesday, 1 December.
Keeping it simple, we have chosen themes for each year for our hampers and have provided you with a few ideas to begin with below. We ask that all contributions be non perishable and something you think you’d love to see in a hamper if you won.

Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon
The Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon will be held at Kilbirnie Park on 27 March 2022.
It is designed for Kiwi kids aged 7-15 years to help them stay active and healthy through a programme of participation. Participants get to swim, cycle, and run their way around age appropriate courses, either as an individual or as part of a team of two.
This is always a popular event for Sacred Heart children and once again in 2022 we have registered a school group. By registering as a school we go in the draw to win prizes for our school. If you are planning on registering your child for the 2022 TRYathlon, please register via our school group link using my details as the school coordinator (Suzanne Adair, suzanneadair@hotmail.com):
