Dear God,
You come to us in Jesus who teaches us that the way to happiness is through our love for one another.
Watch over the teachers, students and families of Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we try to be faithful to this teaching.
Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.
Weekly Update from Bernadette Murfitt
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Welcome back to term 4 of 2021. Where has the year gone? Term 4 is a short term as well. Pacing ourselves is going to be very important. Remember this Friday is a Teacher Only Day so there is no school for students.
Welcome to
Jarryd, Paxton, Santino and Alejandra who have joined the Sacred Heart Cathedral School community. You are going to have a wonderful time at our school and will make lifelong friends.
Next Friday, Mrs Hewson will take leave to have her baby. We had a beautiful assembly on Monday to share our best wishes for both mother and baby. This was a little different as well due to our COVID restrictions but so beautiful and showed just how flexible our staff and students are. Mrs Stewart will be teaching in Room 5 until the end of the school year. Special blessings to Clare and Johnny as they await the birth of their first baby and the wonderful privledge of being a parent. We look forward to sharing in the joy with you once your baby has arrived.
Congratulations to Maia Monoghan who is the recipient of the St Catherine's schoralaship for 2022. We are so proud of you Maia. Well deserved and we look forward to hearing about your future achievements.
Squid Games - The staff have brought this matter to my attention that there is alot of chatter amongst the children about this. Please be aware that this "Drama Series" screening on Netflix has been rated appropriate for viewers who are aged 15 years and over. This rating will be due to the nature of the content.
A snapshot from last Sundays Gospel.
Mā te whakarongo, ka mōhio,
through listening, comes knowledge,
Mā te mōhio, ka mārama,
through knowledge, comes understanding,
Mā te mārama, ka matau,
through understanding, comes wisdom,
Mā te matau, ka ora.
through wisdom, comes well-being.
We are in challenging times and we are not sure what is round the corner. We do have a large number of different events planned for the the remainder of the year. Our school will follow Ministry of Education guidelines and will take a cautious approach. So at the moment we will leave events in the calendar and we will review on a case by case basis and adapt the activity so it is in accordance with public health expectations. We need to expect the unexpected and our staff are adapative to whatever will come our way.
Thank you for all your best wishes for our final term of the year. If you have any concerns regarding the progress your child is making, please contact your child's classroom teacher.
Arohanui,
Bernadette Murfitt

As well as strengthening our connections with others, research shows that kindness and giving makes us happier. And it’s contagious! If we're kind to someone, they're likely to be kind or kinder as a consequence.
This activity encourages everyday kindness by creating opportunities for kids to be kind to each other and the people they care about.
Kindness is something that often comes naturally, but it's good to focus on it too and have it a real whānau value.
Kōrero about kindness as part of what you notice - "she was kind when she helped with the door" or "that was a kind to share that with your sister." Point kindness as you see it in books or during screen time shows.
It's a great if your tamariki understand what kindness is. It's one of those words like 'respect' that we expect everyone knows, but sometimes our definitions differ. Kōrero around this at the dinner table, in the car - during relaxed times:
- What is ‘being kind’?
- What sorts of things can we do to be kind?
- What do people do for us that is helpful, kind or loving?
- How does it feel when someone is kind to us?
- How does it feel when we are kind?
Explain that kindness is like a muscle that gets stronger the more we use it, and that it tends to be contagious. If we smile at someone, they often smile back!
Other kind acts are the same. When we’re kind to others, we encourage them to be kind too. This Kindness Boomerang video will helps show students this flow-on affect.
Finally, brainstorm and activate some cool ways your whānau can be kind:
- Create a whānau kindness sticker chart - any kind act your whānau do gets a sticker, ten stickers means a reward! - go to the museum, beach or park together, have a family movie - something you enjoy doing but acts as a 'treat'.
- Kōrero about how to be kind at school e.g. let a classmate know you saw someone be unkind to them and tell them you'll look out for them, make cards for any tamariki having a challenging time, tell your teacher what you appreciate them - leave them a secret note or some flowers from your garden.
- Think about who else you'd love to show some kindness to, and how you can do this.
- Create a Random Acts of Kindness Calendar for the week (or month) and proactively do something kind everyday.
- Leave compliments around the house for whānau to find - our cut out compliment sheet makes it easy.

Niue Language Week 2021
Celebrated online: Sunday, 17 October – Saturday, 23 October.
This year’s theme for Faahi Tapu he Vagahau Niue – Niue Language Week is Kia Tupuolaola e Moui he Tagata Niue which means May the Tagata Niue thrive.
Kia tupuolaola e moui he Tagata Niue, reminds us of the importance of our Pacific languages and cultures and how they contribute to spiritual, emotional, physical and social wellness for prosperity and wealth in the home, community and nation.
This year’s theme reflects the overarching 2021 Pacific Language Week theme of Wellbeing, by linking the importance of language to overall wellbeing.
Niue is a small island nation northeast of New Zealand and is located in the South Pacific Ocean. Niue is one of the world’s smallest independent nations. It is commonly referred to as 'The Rock', a reference to it being one of the largest raised coral islands in the world.
People from Niue make up the fourth-largest Pacific community living in New Zealand with around 24,000 residing in Aotearoa. Most people with Niuean heritage are born in NZ with only around 1600 currently living in Niue.
