Dear God,
You come to us in Jesus who teaches us that the way to happiness is through our love for one another.
Watch over the teachers, students and families of Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we try to be faithful to this teaching.
Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.

Weekly Update from Bernadette Murfitt
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Last week was very special and we like to think EVERY week is Te Reo Māori week. But nationally, the celebration of our beautiful indigenous language continues to undergo revitalisation especially during Māori language week. While driving to school last week, I did hear Stacey Morrison say that every time a person speaks Te Reo, they are helping another person to grow and develop in Te Reo.
Forty years ago this past week - a small group of elders and rangatahi walked off the sands of Te Hāpua in the Far North and started their long hikoi to Wellington.
The 14th September 1975 was the first day of the Māori Land March and Dame Whina Cooper led an ever growing group (Te Ropu o te Matakite) over the following weeks down the island towards Parliament.
By the time they reached Wellington, they were 5000 strong. This land march heralded the beginning of a resurgence of Māori language, culture and identity and was a powerful statement about the continuing importance of the Treaty to our mutual futures.
Much has changed since that time, many advances have been made and many challenges still exist but the journey still continues.
"Take care of our children. Take care of what they hear, take care of what they see, take care of what they feel. For how the children grow, so will be the shape of Aotearoa" - Dame Whina Cooper.
A very warm welcome to Pedro who started at our school in Room 5 on Monday. Pedro, you are going to love your time at Sacred Heart Cathedral School and will make lifelong friends.
Soup Kitchen
By Charlotte, Iliana and Jessica
On Thursday, 16th of September, our school got the privilege of wearing mufti and in return we were able to donate non-perishable foods such as pasta, rice and canned goods for The Soup Kitchen.
Over these past months, The Soup Kitchen has been struggling to provide for the less fortunate in Wellington. Since the annual appeal couldn’t go ahead, we thought it would be appropriate to donate food to help.
In the morning, each student brought in their own contribution. The Liturgy Leaders collected the food and brought it down to the office, where we packed the foods into recyclable bags.
As a Catholic school, we are taught the importance of service to the less fortunate in our community. Our mission is to follow in Jesus’ example by giving back to the people who need it more.
Overall, we felt a sense of accomplishment being able to provide food for the disadvantaged. We were also able to reflect and feel grateful for everything that we have been given.

Fun in the Sun
Our Senior students have been facilitating fun games off the sports trolley with our students. We have been taking advantage of the days we can get outside.
Unuhia te pō, te pō whiri mārama
Tomokia te ao, te ao whatu tāngata
Tātai ki runga, tātai ki raro, tātai aho rau
Haumi e, hui e, tāiki e!
From confusion comes understanding
From understanding comes unity
We are interwoven, we are interconnected
Together as one!

Mr. Solia has been working with students creating murals in the shape of fish. Fish act as a link between the Pacific Islands and New Zealand.
Students have learnt to create traditional patterns based on mathematical understanding of symmetry, positive and negative images while encompassing religious and geographic features. These are work in progress and we look forward to sharing this display.
The symmetry represents the symbol of fishing nets.
Designs are the same designs used in Tapa and Tatau (tatoo).
Stories are able to be told through Tapu and Tatau.

Next week is Mental Health Awareness Week and we wanted to share with you some of the ways we are supporting our young people at Sacred Heart Cathedral School to be resilient with a strong inner self.
Last term, the teaching staff had a day together learning about different wellbeing strategies that support our young people. Mrs. Hewson shared our school jouney with teachers across our Wellington Catholic Kāhui Ako. We thought families might find the following slides useful.
Father, we thank you for all the children in our school.
Each one is so special and precious to you. Thank you for the skills and talents you have given us as teachers.
We offer them to you now and ask for your blessings on them.
Lord, we give you this time as we plan and make decisions for our school.
We ask for you guidance, inspiration and direction.
Holy Spirit, may we be sensitive to your leading as we talk and share together.
Amen.
Monday, 27th September is our school photo day. Please ensure that your child is wearing the complete and correct school winter uniform. If your child has a sibling in the school, please be in school at 8:20am as the photographer will start to take siblings photos at that time. The children who are in touch and netball teams will need to bring their team uniform.
Feast of Saint Lorenzo Ruiz - Filipino Students Can Come to School in Their Cultural Attire
