Comments from an out-going Board of Trustees member
Why be a School Board Trustee?
I’m Kaye Stirling and have served on the Board of Trustees for 6 years. I am stepping down before the next election as my youngest child finishes at Sacred Heart this year. I have thoroughly enjoyed being a trustee, working with a fantastic bunch of people from our principal, staff, trustees and others in the parish, all of whom care deeply about the children, who are our focus.
I became a trustee because I felt that I could contribute my time and skills to assist the school. It’s a challenging time for schools to navigate the myriad issues of not only educating our children to be the best that they can be academically, spiritually and personally, but also managing all the other responsibilities such as: school property, finances, health and safety (both physical and mental), staff, ensuring that we maintain our special Catholic character and connection with our community. No one person can navigate all those issues. It takes a team of people with different skills , who can work together collaboratively, and that has been the strength of our Board. Schools rely on volunteer support. We all want the best for our children and serving on the Board is a great way to contribute and give back.
My particular role in the last 6 years has been to oversee and improve our policies and procedures. The biggest challenge for me was updating our processes so that we complied with the Health & Safety legislation introduced in 2015. It was satisfying to see that through and to know that we now have a robust health & safety system. Other trustees have taken responsibility for different areas in which they have experience and knowledge. It’s that collaboration which works so well and which, I believe, means that the school is in good shape today. However, we can never rest on our laurels and it is vitally important that a variety of people with fresh ideas and different skills be encouraged to serve as trustees.
So, to everyone in our school community, please consider running for election as a Trustee, especially if the following factors resonate with you:
- You want to share your time and talents. As a member of a school board, you have an opportunity to share your skills and life experience to benefit your community.
- You can represent different groups in the community and ensure that others have a voice in making educational and administrative decisions. It is important that Boards represent the diversity of the school community.
- You can help create stronger ties between the school board and other stakeholders, such as the Parish and the school community.
- You have the ability to work with others. As a trustee it is important that you are good at: listening to others; accepting other views and cultural differences; reading and critically assessing information; supporting the Principal, and have an understanding of governance.
- You have an interest in preserving and improving the quality of your school.
- You believe in quality Catholic education for current and future students.
- You want to ensure that there is a bright future for all the children at Sacred Heart!

Special thanks to Debbie and Father Doug who were able to join us on the last day of term for stations of the cross.
Special thanks to our students who led reflections at each station and made links for us all as to how we can be even better people.
The atmosphere at each station was very respectful and thought provoking. We are very appreciative to Jane our DRS who supported our staff and students preparing for this event and on the day.

Why it is Important to learn about Jesus ?
"Jesus tells us to and helps us to be better people. As the younger generation, we want the world to be a better place. Unfortunately, the world isn't perfect so it is hard to accomplish things but I believe it is possible if we follow in Jesus' footsteps.
I am following in Jesus' footsteps when I am kind to my friends. I am kind because it makes me and someone else feel better. If we are all kind and loving to each other the world will become a better place for everyone."
Thomas B, Room 9
Why are Liturgy Leaders important in our school?
"I think Liturgy Leaders are important in our school because of how they connect everyone to Jesus. We teach and share Bible stories, prayers and thoughts about Jesus and God. We try and share it in a way that the school can relate to and understand, so that everyone feels like they have a strong relationship and connection with God.
My goal as a Liturgy Leader is to inspire the rest of the school to walk in the footsteps of Jesus and and to maybe one day when they are older to join Liturgy Leaders."
Aine, Rm 9
