Dear God,
You come to us in Jesus who teaches us that the way to happiness is through our love for one another.
Watch over the teachers, students and families of Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we try to be faithful to this teaching.
Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.

Weekly Update from Christine Geraghty
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Well it certainly is a relief to be back to Level 1 in Wellington. It has been a timely reminder that we are nowhere near the end of this tricky virus as it mutates globally. As is often mentioned, it is not Level none! The everyday practices that we have used for it are also good for other winter ills and chills.
The Mihi Whakatau planned for last Thursday, which was postponed due to the change in the Covid Alert Level, has been rescheduled for Thursday, 5th of August at 9am, due to uncertain Alert Levels and proximity to the end of term.
The Matariki Celebration can now go ahead tomorrow, Thursday, 1st July. The school will be open from 5.00-6.30pm for parents/caregivers to come and play a board game in Maori with your child/children in their class or syndicate, enjoy a sausage and a milo, and meet other parents. Some of the Student Council and I are on the sausages and milos. If there are any more parents able to help me supervise them, please let me know or just turn up!
This is a family activity and children will need to be supervised by parents at this event. After School Care is unable to accommodate extra children, as it is already operating at its maximum capacity. Children will continue to learn about Matariki in their classes.
A huge THANK YOU to Odette Hoera for putting together a Matariki whanau reflection. This will come home via the youngest child in your family tomorrow. Check their bags if it doesn't appear!
Thank you for your support last Thursday afternoon, as we met online to discuss our collective agreement/work conditions, which is part of our collective bargaining process. While this does benefit us, it is also about future proofing education in a wider sense. The way everything ran so smoothly around children's arrangements for staying/going, was a huge help.
Congratulations to the students who represented us at the Central Zone Winter Sports Festival last Wednesday. They participated with enthusiasm and fairness. As always, they aere a credit to the school. Look later in the newsletter for more details.
Some Room 9 students have been involved in online learning around being a Young Entrepreneur. They have shared their learning with you further down here. Well done Rupert, Felix and Daniel.
Advance notice of Mufti Mania on the last day of term, Thursday, 8th July. Students can come in mufti (ordinary clothes not uniform) and bring a donation for Caritas, see article for further details.
This past week has reminded us all how quickly things can change and how we all need to adapt to these changes. As a country, we continue to live relatively normal lives and it is easy to forget what restrictions to that mean. It is also easy to get comfortable and forget to maintain safe practices. This is a good time to help children cope with change and disappointment. It is also a time for us to remember countries and people still suffering hugely under this pandemic and pray that progress continues to be made treating and controlling it. Winter arrived yesterday with a vengeance, so keep warm, be kind and stay safe.
Arohanui,
Christine Geraghty,
Acting Principal
Sacred Heart Cathedral School
Just a reminder that if your child is not attending school, please notify the school with a reason for your child's absence. This can be done via SchoolAppsNZ, emailing the school - office@sacred-heart.school.nz or leaving a message on the school answerphone - 04 4724047. We are now able to access messages on the school answerphone. Thank you to all parents who already do this.
2022 Enrolments CLOSE on 31 JULY 2021
A reminder that our 2022 enrolments close on 31 July 2021. If your child has a sibling that you would like to attend Sacred Heart Cathedral School in 2022, please ensure that a completed Enrolment form, Preference Certificate and Attendance Dues form are submitted to the school before 31 July 2021. The preference certificate needs to be completed and signed by a Bishop's Agent - this would usually be your parish priest. A copy of your child's baptismal certificate and NZ birth certificate or NZ passport is also needed. The enrolment pack can be downloaded from the school website: http://www.sacred-heart.school.nz or call the school office for a copy (04) 4724047.
Mothers' Night Out - POSTPONED until Term 3
Mum's night out is postponed til next term. Date to be communicated.
Mufti Mania - Thursday 8th July
WHEN: Thursday, 8th July.
WHERE: Sacred Heart Cathedral School
How to support: Wear Mufti and bring a donation for Caritas.
Where does our money go?
For Mufti Mania in 2021 Caritas are asking all Catholic Schools to support a school in West Papua called Kristus Raja School. The students at this small school have felt the impact of the pandemic and been in lockdown since March 2020! The majority of students come from poorer families and have found remote learning a real challenge. The school was built back in 1970 and the buildings are wearing out. Funds raised this year will help repair toilets and bathrooms and provide new desks, chairs and resources for students for when they come back to school.
The Winter Festival is a day of exercise and fun activities for senior and middle students. It is organised and run by students at Wellington East Girls' College as part of their NCEA requirements. The day is an opportunity for them to experience co-ordinating and managing larger events as well as designing a programme that will engage and entertain. It is a highlight of the winter calendar and is always fun to attend.
What Happened at the Winter Festival
It's 9:30am and we get a pep talk with Mrs Stephen. She told us that “We have always been great students when we go to the Winter Festival and I want to keep it that way so let's go and have some fun!”. So as we jump on the bus we get so excited. Ten minutes later we get there and all I can see is kids jumping up and down to play some sport.
As we go in we see the Maori All blacks training to verse Manu Samoa. When we saw the Maori All Blacks, we also saw the instructors who were going to take us for our games. One person said that this is going to be a fun day.
We got there and to the surprise of other children waiting for us, each syndicate had their own group. Our proud group name was Neptune. Each group was assigned a name from the planets.
We first went and played a basketball game referring to Space Jam. Just saying, each game was based on a movie. The Space Jam challenge is golden child. When you play, the team will be split up into 2 teams. One team will be shooting and the other team will be running. Shooters will have to get a shot in by the free throw line. If they get it in, they will get the runner out meaning that they would sit down and the other player in their team could run. If no one gets it in when you're running, you go to the other side and that would equal a point. You continue going until the last person gets to the other side of the court.
This person will be the golden child meaning that they will tag everyone who sat down and all of them will start running, but if someone gets it in and the golden child is running, everyone who got tagged by the child will sit down again and they will lose the whole match. That is one match we played and there were many other matches we played.

Winter Fest Review
Before I start, I would like to thank Mr Grevatt & Mrs Stephen for taking me to Winter Fest. Faafetai lava!
I had such a great time at Winter Fest. There were a ton of fun and interesting games and I made a lot of friends from different schools.
At WinterFest, the schools were split into groups that were named after a planet in the Solar System; the Senior Syndicate was Neptune. There were 5 to 6 people in our group from different schools.
Winter Fest games were based on movies like Jumanji, Harry Potter and Space Jam, to name a few. My favourite game was our third game, which was based on The Hunger Games. It was like Rippa Rugby combined with Ultimate Tag, but you could get as many flags as you wanted and you could give your flags to someone that had no tags and was on the floor that was from our team. The goal of the game is to get as many tags on you.
At the end, a prize was awarded to the people that showed good sportsmanship. I was stoked to receive one! I was rewarded with a bouncy ball, and some chocolates. At the end of the prize giving, free prizes went out to the crowd.
I really enjoyed the Winter Fest. I had a great time and made some new friends. I look forward to next year!
