Dear God,
You come to us in Jesus who teaches us that the way to happiness is through our love for one another.
Watch over the teachers, students and families of Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we try to be faithful to this teaching.
Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.

Weekly Update from Christine Geraghty
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
COVID ALERT LEVEL 2 from today at 6pm until midnight Sunday.
A communication is coming out separately about this. Please read through and contact us if you have any concerns.
Paid Union Meeting - Tomorrow (Thursday, 24 June):
This is now going to be run online so the same arrangements are in place concerning student attendance. Please let Cathy know if you are intending on leaving your child/children at school tomorrow afternoon and /or are sending them to after school care. office@sacred-heart.school.nz
Children will be released from school at 1pm, unless requested otherwise. Please make sure your child/children know the arrangements you want for them.
Please note, we have been contacted by our neighbour regarding the use of Eccleston Hill to drop off and pick up children. This is a steep, narrow street with no footpath. Please do not use this as a drop off/pick up point; Hill Street and Molesworh Street are safer and more suitable.
Another reminder regarding Seasons for Growth, which we are looking to offer next term. This is a programme to help children cope with grief and loss. We would hope to run it in two age groups. We do need enough children to do this and children themselves need to be happy to participate. Please contact Jane Regan or myself by this Friday, if you want more information or you want your child/children to participate.
Last week, R9 led our Virtue Assembly on Love which ties in with The Feast of the Sacred Heart. The liturgy leaders led prayers around the school and their power point is shared in the rest of the newsletter.
Love is about empathy and sacrifice, as shared at Assembly in 1 Corinthians 13 - Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
This is in contrast with the commercialised and romanticised version that is sold to us through the media. For children, kindness to self and others, is a great practical way to start understanding and applying it.
A group of Y4-8 children are representing the school today at the Central Zone Winter Sports Festival at ASB in Kilbirnie. This is focused on participation, fun and trying something new! There will be more next week on it! Thank you to Ann Stephen and John Grevatt for organising this.
Depending on Alert Levels, we are hoping to celebrate Matariki starting next Thursday, 5-6.30pm. We are planning an evening for families where children play board games in Maori in their classes download the star app, and have a sausage and a milo. The Student Council and I are on the sausages and milos. If there are any parents able to help me supervise them, please let me know.
It is always good to get "the shortest day" out of the way and gradually see the skies lightening! We do however still have the coldest months to get through.
Wrap up, stay warm and listen for the next update on Wellington's Covid response on Sunday night.
Arohanui,
Christine Geraghty,
Acting Principal

Paid Union Meeting on 24th June 2021
We have been advised that there will be a Paid Union Meeting for primary teachers on the afternoon of Thursday, 24th June 2021. At this meeting members will vote on the direction and priorities for their 2022 collective agreement renewal campaign. This Paid Union Meeting is not strike action and the law allows for two Paid Union Meetings each year.
On 24th June, we ask our parents, where possible, to support teachers by picking children up at the earlier time of 1pm. School will remain open in the afternoon with supervision for those children who cannot be picked up early. Please advise Cathy in the office (office@sacred-heart.school.nz) if you are unable to pick up your child early so that supervision can be arranged. After School Care will operate as normal from 2.40pm.

2022 Enrolments CLOSE on 31 JULY 2021
A reminder that our 2022 enrolments close on 31 July 2021. If your child has a sibling that you would like to attend Sacred Heart Cathedral School in 2022, please ensure that a completed Enrolment form, Preference Certificate and Attendance Dues form are submitted to the school before 31 July 2021. The preference certificate needs to be completed and signed by a Bishop's Agent - this would usually be your parish priest. A copy of your child's baptismal certificate and NZ birth certificate or NZ passport is also needed. The enrolment pack can be downloaded from the school website: http://www.sacred-heart.school.nz or call the school office for a copy (04) 4724047.
Here is what the liturgy leaders prepared and presented around the school. Well done to them!
Change and loss are issues that affect all of us at some stage in our lives. At Sacred Heart Cathedral School, we recognise that when changes occur in families through death, separation, divorce and related circumstances, young people may benefit from learning how to manage these changes effectively. We are therefore offering a very successful education program called Seasons for Growth which will commence in Term 3. This programme is facilitated in small groups and is based on research which highlights the importance of social support and the need to practise new skills to cope effectively with change and loss. The program focuses on issues such as self-esteem, managing feelings, problem-solving, decision-making, effective communication and support networks.
If you think your son or daughter would benefit from Seasons for Growth, we would encourage you to talk to him/her about participating in the program. We are confident that it will be a valuable learning experience for those who request to be involved.
If you require further information and/or would like your child to be involved, please contact Jane Regan, jane@sacred-heart.school.nz or for Term 2, Christine Geraghty christine@sacred-heart.school.nz.
We need families to indicate interest by Thursday, 24th June, please.
