Dear God,
You come to us in Jesus who teaches us that the way to happiness is through our love for one another.
Watch over the teachers, students and families of Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we try to be faithful to this teaching.
Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.
Weekly Update from Christine Geraghty
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
What a lovely First Communion Mass last Sunday at St Thomas More Church in Wilton. As you can see from the photo, the children looked very beautiful as they did themselves and their families proud.
First Communion:
If other children have made their First Communion in another Parish, please send us a photo so we can celebrate it in another newsletter.
Reminder: Paid Union Meeting on Thursday, 24 June at 1.30-2-30pm. The school will finish at 1pm.
The purpose of these meetings is for teachers to discuss the priorities for the renegotiation of their collective agreement in 2022. Issues being discussed, such as school staffing levels, directly impact on the education of your children. These meetings are a critical component of the negotiation process and it is the legal right of all members to attend a meeting and have their say.
Please see the piece further down from Suzanne Adair about this.
The staff had a worthwhile day on Friday going over the Pause Breathe Smile programme that will be run in classes in the future. This is a wholistic approach to mental health and teaches mindfulness as a way to achieve good outcomes in this area.
Congratulations to all the children who participated in the Central Zone Cross Country last Wednesday and to those place getters who went on to the Interzone Competition yesterday. Thank you to Ann Stephen for organising this (see further down for more information and photos).
A small group of Y7/8s had the opportunity yesterday to take part in a workshop as part of the the Artist in Residence programme at Marsden Collegiate in Karori. The artist sharing his expertise is William Docherty. Many thanks to Alison Jones for taking them and being with them. See below for some of their gorgeous creations.
Matariki advance notice!
Our community celebration of Matariki this year will end with a family evening from 5-6:30pm on Thursday, 1 July. Children will be able to play games in maori in their classes. Sausages and hot milos will be available and there is a stargazing app that you can download and use.
If there are parents who can help the Student Council and myself with the sausages and milos, that would be much appreciated.
Lets hope this amazing weather continues for the weekend.
Arohanui,
Christine Geraghty

Paid Union Meeting on 24th June 2021
We have been advised that there will be a Paid Union Meeting for primary teachers on the afternoon of Thursday, 24th June 2021. At this meeting members will vote on the direction and priorities for their 2022 collective agreement renewal campaign. This Paid Union Meeting is not strike action and the law allows for two Paid Union Meetings each year.
On 24th June, we ask our parents, where possible, to support teachers by picking children up at the earlier time of 1pm. School will remain open in the afternoon with supervision for those children who cannot be picked up early. Please advise Cathy in the office (office@sacred-heart.school.nz) if you are unable to pick up your child early so that supervision can be arranged. After School Care will operate as normal from 2.40pm.

Artist in Residency Experience
Congratulations to Mhielle, Bianca, Sabina and Alex for their creative art work from this workshop!

Caritas’ Social Justice Project
Six illustrators from room 9 were chosen to draw and colour 5 pictures for the Caritas’ Social Justice Project. For this project, we needed to design a brown, furry monster, after coming up with different designs, we decided on one. Caritas asked the Room 9 artists if we would like to help them, and we did!
First things first, we started off designing a monster but it was individual at the beginning (three people were designing the monster) and then one was picked. We started drawing the drafts of the picture. After that, we went onto the good copy. We tried our best to keep the characters and a lot of the illustrations as similar as possible. Finally, we looked at the drawings and fixed mistakes and changed things.
After the designing process, we outlined and started the colouring process.
This part was our favourite as we got to look at different colours and test out different patterns. We managed to keep all of the colours the same throughout all of the different pictures! In the end, the illustrations turned out amazing! We enjoyed this project using our creativity talents during school.

Congratulations to all the students who represented Sacred Heart Cathedral School in the Central Zone Cross Country last Wednesday, 9 June at Liardet Park.
Yesterday 8 Sacred Heart students competed at the Interzone Cross Country Competition which was held at a very muddy Grenada North Park. These students had placed in the top ten of the Central zone so as you can imagine, the competition at Interzone was of a very high standard. It was a long and hard course, but Sacred Heart students took it all in their stride. They competed with heart and determination!
Well done to Dishan Year 4, Leon Year 5, James Year 6, Lachie M, Theo and Felix, Year 7, Bianca and Flynn Year 8.
Thank you to parents/grandparents who helped with transportation.
And congratulations to Lachie M who made it into the next round of competition and will compete at Regionals next month.
Thanks to supporters of our annual pub quiz
Thank you to those who supported the annual pub quiz last week. We have raised $656.00 and want to express our gratitude to the generous sponsors of gifts for our raffle - Juliette Florist (https://www.julietteflorist.co.nz/) and Alan and Cathy Woods. A special thank you to Katy Rob for organising the signed bottles by Jacinda Adern and Grant Robertson. We do appreciate all those parents, friends and colleagues who made an effort to come out and support the school’s fundraising efforts. This money will go back into the school towards IT and extra curricular activities. Also a big thank you to our Parents & Friends group and Amanda Gregan for all her work in organising this annual event. Thank you again, it was such a fun night!
Sacred Heart Shooters (Years 5/6 team) played St Pat's and lost 9:10. It was a very exciting game to watch.
Sacred Heart Ferns (Years 7/8 team) played EBIS and won 39:5.
Change and loss are issues that affect all of us at some stage in our lives. At Sacred Heart Cathedral School, we recognise that when changes occur in families through death, separation, divorce and related circumstances, young people may benefit from learning how to manage these changes effectively. We are therefore offering a very successful education program called Seasons for Growth which will commence in Term 3. This programme is facilitated in small groups and is based on research which highlights the importance of social support and the need to practise new skills to cope effectively with change and loss. The program focuses on issues such as self-esteem, managing feelings, problem-solving, decision-making, effective communication and support networks.
If you think your son or daughter would benefit from Seasons for Growth, we would encourage you to talk to him/her about participating in the program. We are confident that it will be a valuable learning experience for those who request to be involved.
If you require further information and/or would like your child to be involved, please contact Jane Regan, jane@sacred-heart.school.nz or for Term 2, Christine Geraghty christine@sacred-heart.school.nz.
We need families to indicate interest by Thursday, 24th June, please.
