Weekly Update from Bernadette Murfitt
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
Thank you all very much for the support you have given our school throughout term 1, it is very much appreciated.
Next term we will be having a science focus and look forward to sharing student learning with you throughout the term.
Our Easter raffle raised about $1,200.00. This was a grand effort and is contributing to our final playground payment.
Our last day of term will be a house mufti day - gold coin - this is a fundraiser for Caritas. After the stations of the cross, we will walk up to Anderson Park for a "full school sports session." Parents are welcome to join us .
Wishing you all a wonderful Easter break and we are looking forward to exciting learning activities in term 2.
Christ is Risen, Alleluia, Alleluia Alleluia.
"He is not here; for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay." Matthew 28:6

Paid Union Meeting Monday 6th May
Staff will be attending a Paid Union Meeting on Monday, 06 May.
We would appreciate it if you could pick your child up from school at 12.30pm in order for teaching staff to attend the meeting.
Bernadette and support staff will supervise those students whose parents are unable to pick up at the earlier time.
After School Care Programme will run as normal from 2.40 until 5.30pm.
Thanking you in advance.
Innerfit Mind Body & Soul - a Celebration of Learning
Our Mind, Body and Soul was a huge success. We were blessed with a beautiful afternoon and many parent supporters.
Thank you to Mike Loftus who introduced our staff to a way of teaching physical education that builds on skills, encourages engagement and participation. Mike also invited several Members of Parliament (Nicola Willis, Louise Upston and Scott Simpson) to see how we have implemented and integrated physical activity into life at Sacred Heart Cathedral School.
As a staff we were so proud of all of our students at the Mind, Body and Soul presentation.
- 100% student participation
- Demonstration of a wide range of games (Noodle tag, Chuck the Vortex, Basketball tag, Ultimate Frisbee, Battleball, It, Ultimate Ball, and Hoop Ball)
- MCs and students speaking on behalf of their class
- Student leadership with sound and equipment
Special thanks to the team here at Sacred Heart Cathedral School who enthusiastically participated in Professional Development, learnt games and taught our students skills and attitudes that develop the whole person.
Special thanks to Ann and John who coordinated the afternoon on behalf of the staff.
We had such a great turn out of families - thank you for all the support and encouragement. You could see how this way of teaching Physical Education is empowering as well as a means of developing many key values and skills all combined with a positive attitude.
It was a real bonus for families to go into classrooms and view the terms learning.

House Colour Mufti Day on Last Day of Term
On Friday (12 April), we are holding a house colour sports mufti day - a gold coin donation for Caritas. Fantail/Piwakawaka - Blue, Woodpigeon/Kereru - Green, White Heron/Kotuku Yellow, Kingfisher/Kotare Red.
After Stations of the Cross beginning at 9.00am, we will then go up to Anderson Park at approximately 10.30am for a sports session. All parents are welcome to attend both the Stations of the Cross and the Sports event.
Sacred Heart Cathedral School Uniform Survey
Context: The Board of Trustees has been looking at moving the supply of our school uniform to NZ Uniforms on Thorndon Quay. Currently, the school uniform is managed and ordered at school by Robyn and the summer and winter dresses are made individually to order.
Reasons for potential change: The current fabrics used for the summer and winter dresses are coming to the end of a previous bulk purchase amount. Before we buy another bulk lot, we wish to look at our options and ways of purchasing school uniform to ensure that how we order uniforms makes the best financial and practical sense for our school.
The buying and selling of uniform is a big job for a relatively small school to manage.
Benefits of moving to NZ Uniforms: We can benefit from bulk ordering through NZ Uniforms. We would not have the risk and expense of holding stock.
In the future, we could more easily make changes to the uniform, utilising their large range of uniform options.
NZ Uniforms will give the school an ongoing donation based on sales, will offer a way of saving for children’s school uniforms through the Uniform Club and online shopping options are also available. NZ Uniforms is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5.30pm and Saturday from 9am to 4pm.
The current uniform: The traditional green colour scheme of the Sacred Heart Cathedral School’s uniform is part of the history and heritage of the school and the intention is to keep the uniform and colour as similar as possible to the current uniform. However, there will be some slight changes and additions which are outlined below.
- The winter fabric for the girls’ tunic and skirt would be a slightly different green colour (changing from a bottle green to an emerald green). This is due to only a few schools in New Zealand wearing the green tartan and the current colour we wear is not available unless we make a special order. This would be an order of a substantial amount of fabric for a relatively small school. We consider that it would be best to move to the slightly different colour so we can take advantage of bulk ordering of this fabric with other schools rather than having to get our own fabric made. The new jumpers and ties would change slightly in colour to match the new tartan colour. Samples are available at the office if you wish to view the new winter fabric.
- There is no comparable similar summer dress fabric on offer from NZ Uniforms. We consider that in order to minimise change, the best option would be to get our current colour and pattern made and bulk ordered from NZ Uniform.
- Changing the PE polo shirt to breathable sports fabric (a sample is available at the office).
- Most other changes are minor.
We would like to know your views on the questions below.

School Holiday Game Development Workshops for Kids
NZ Games Festival’s Industry Growth Programme Level Up
The main goal of Level Up is to engage and inspire local kids to get involved with game development. This is a rapidly growing sector in New Zealand’s burgeoning tech industry, that comprises skill sets ranging from programming and design through to art, writing and music. There’s a world of potential in the games industry for kids to launch extremely fulfilling careers that they’re passionate about - and Level Up is all about helping kids of any age discover their pathways.
To this end, we have a number of fun and educational events these school holidays, including:
- Kids workshops at Capital E: In partnership with Capital E, we’ve built a programme of workshops where industry players will introduce kids to the basics of game development. We have a diverse slate of workshops this year, including writing for video games, creating 3D art, programming basic games and learning to stream eSports.
You can find out more about our kids workshops via the NZ Games Festival website, or the Capital E website.
- Level Up Exhibition at FLUX at Wellington Museum: This is our flagship week-long showcase of local and family-friendly games. Finalists from the NZ Games Festival awards will be available for people of all ages to enjoy for free! The exhibition will be open all week, including public holidays.
If you’d like any more information about Level Up or the festival in general, please contact Alex Woodward by email: events@nzgamesfest.com. You can also visit nzgamesfest.com to see our full line-up of events.
