Dear God,
You come to us in Jesus who teaches us that the way to happiness is through our love for one another.
Watch over the teachers, students and families of Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we try to be faithful to this teaching.
Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.
Weekly Update from Christine Geraghty
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
A warm welcome to Joaquin R1 who started school on Monday. We hope you and your family enjoy and benefit from your time here at Sacred Heart Cathedral School.
There were some creative outfits as the school participated in "Pink Shirt Day" on Friday, 21st. Some middle school students are creating a video which we will share next week. The day is part of a wider emphasis on wellness, both mental and physical, that we are all being encouraged to become more aware of.
Classes have been learning about ways to be inclusive, tolerant, kind and upstanding. While this learning happens all year, there is a specific focus on it around the national day.
Older students often justify putting others down as "just a joke" but the subject of the joke rarely finds it funny. The other thing that older students use to say unkind things to and about others, is the screen, which provides relative anonymity. It is important if this happens, that students let an adult at home and school know, so we can help sort it out.
As Pope Francis said "The Holy Spirit loves to shape unity from the most beautiful and harmonious diversity."
Some of the learning done recently in classes is about why 'Pink Shirt Day' is important at our school, what it means to be an upstander, who some significant ones are and what they have done. Also practising kindness and what that looks and sounds like, making cards and watching relevant videos with buddies.
We have discussed coping strategies to use when things are said to and about others, that make students feel uncomfortable. Your support and reinforcement of these ideas at home, is a huge help to us. Here are some websites to support you in this.

On Monday, the Goodtime Music Academy entertained the school at Assembly. Their performance was very active, loud and thoroughly enjoyed by the children. Many thanks to St Mary's for the use of their hall for longer than usual.
A flyer has been sent home explaining how you can sign your child up for music lessons. Their website is www.goodtimemusicacademy.co.nz.
School Cross Country Year 4-8:
This was postponed yesterday due to the weather and was held this morning instead. Winners will represent the school at the Central Zone Competition on Wednesday, 9th June. Classes have been training hard and there is a big range of fitness evident!!!
Many thanks to all the teachers for preparing their students and to Ann Stephen and John Grevatt for organising the school event (again see photos later in the newsletter!).
Tomorrow is our Pasifika Liturgy, 12.45-1.30pm at St Mary's Hall. This is to celebrate the Pasifika languages and cultures within our school and it will be followed by a cup of tea/coffee for parents in the school library. Those children can come to school wearing clothing that reflects their culture, to add to the specialness of the day.
Many thanks to Jay Manu'a who is on the BOT, for the pasifika language resources he has given to all teachers.
There is also an opportunity to walk around the classrooms after the liturgy and interact with the children, who will be creating different forms of pasifika art and crafts.
Here is some wisdom from the past, for the present to benefit from!!!
Wishing you all the best for the rest of the week.
Arohanui,
Christine Geraghty

Room 1 has had an early start to Samoan Language Week. We have been learning some simple questions and answers in Samoan. We made a Samoan Sei (headband) for our pictures of ourselves.
Phases of the Moon Using Oreo Cookies - Room 7
During class, we used Oreo cookies to represent the phases of the moon. We spread the icing from the oreo cookies to look like the phases of the moon. Fun fact!: Many students thought the waning crescent and waxing crescent phase looked like a banana or apple slices.

Archie from Room 2 and Violet from Room 3 play ripper rugby for MSP Under 7s. The team is undefeated with Archie and Violet receiving Player of the Day in week 2 for Archie and week 3 for Violet. Ka pai!

Paid Union Meeting on 24th June 2021
We have been advised that there will be a Paid Union Meeting for primary teachers on the afternoon of Thursday, 24th June 2021. At this meeting members will vote on the direction and priorities for their 2022 collective agreement renewal campaign. This Paid Union Meeting is not strike action and the law allows for two Paid Union Meetings each year.
On 24th June, we ask our parents, where possible, to support teachers by picking children up at the earlier time of 1pm. School will remain open in the afternoon with supervision for those children who cannot be picked up early. Please advise Cathy in the office (office@sacred-heart.school.nz) if you are unable to pick up your child early so that supervision can be arranged. After School Care will operate as normal from 2.40pm.
