Dear God,
You come to us in Jesus who teaches us that the way to happiness is through our love for one another.
Watch over the teachers, students and families of Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we try to be faithful to this teaching.
Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.
Weekly Update from Christine Geraghty
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
It was lovely to see our swimming trialists at Karori Pool last Thurdsay, swimming in their chosen events! Another thing we were unable to do last year.
Thank you to Ann Stephen and John Gravatt plus their teacher trainees, Hannah and Tarla for their organisation. Also to the supporting parents, especially for their help with the backstroke races. Results will be used to select students to represent the school at the Central Zone Competition next term.

Thank you to Tessa Gudgeon and Odette Hoera for their input at the Hui to discuss Matariki celebrations this year. We look forward to this as a special time of gratitude, remembering and planning ahead.
The British High Commission has advised us that there will be an armed offenders' squad exercise taking place at the High Commission, on Monday, 24th May at 11am-12.00noon. Personnel will be in full combat uniform carrying rifles and tasers but there will be no live ammunition in the weapons and children will be in class the whole time.
Please also note there is a Paid Union Meeting for all teachers planned for June. Suzanne Adair, the BOT Chairperson has details concerning this later in the newsletter.
Digital and online safety is a constant issue for individuals, families and workplaces. Netsafe is a good place for advice and teachers cover aspects during the year.
There is an Online Safety Information Presentation, organised by the Kahui Ako - a cooperative group of inner city Catholic Schools - that we are part of. It is on Tuesday, 8th June at Samuel Marsden Collegiate School Auditorium, 7-8.30pm. It sounds relevant and informative. Entry is a gold coin donation which will go to the Wellington Soup Kitchen. You can look up more details at www.ourkidsonline.info. and there is an interesting news article on it at https://www.stuff.co.
The Bee Healthy mobile dental clinic arrived in the school last week. They are in the school for the next 4 weeks and start seeing children this week.
As part of our Professional Development the school is part of the Kura Ahuera programme which uses local stories to explore the tikanga in our area and integrates Te Reo language structures. See R6's Art work!
The Student Council have been working to promote "Trash Free Tuesday." They have prepared a slideshow for each syndicate. The Senior Syndicate one is shared in the newsletter. Well done to you all!
While the days are getting wetter, darker, shorter and colder, there have been some lovely ones for us to get the children out into! Let's hope these stretch into the weekend for us all.
Have a great week.
Arohanui,
Christine Geraghty

Paid Union Meeting on 24th June 2021
We have been advised that there will be a Paid Union Meeting for primary teachers on the afternoon of Thursday, 24th June 2021. At this meeting members will vote on the direction and priorities for their 2022 collective agreement renewal campaign. This Paid Union Meeting is not strike action and the law allows for two Paid Union Meetings each year.
On 24th June, we ask our parents, where possible, to support teachers by picking children up at the earlier time of 1pm. School will remain open in the afternoon with supervision for those children who cannot be picked up early. Please advise Cathy in the office (office@sacred-heart.school.nz) if you are unable to pick up your child early so that supervision can be arranged. After School Care will operate as normal from 2.40pm.

Pink Shirt Day on Friday (21st May)
On Friday, 21st May 2021, we ask Sacred Heart to Kōrero Mai, Kōrero Atu, Mauri Tū, Mauri Ora – Speak Up, Stand Together, Stop Bullying!
Pink Shirt Day is about working together to stop bullying by celebrating diversity and promoting kindness and inclusiveness.
Students are asked to come to school dressed in mufti, wearing something pink to show their support for Pink Shirt Day and anti-bullying.
Room 1 have been sharing some items for their own cultures as away of launching into learning about NZ culture. They made selfies to show where they originate from.
Room Six has learnt the Maori Creation story- Ranginui and Papatuanuku and have created artwork to reflect the story using chalk pastels.
Every culture or civilisation has its stories about how the world was created
The Maori creation story has been passed on from grandparents to their children, to their children’s children.
Ranginui and Papatūānuku, Tāne, Tangaroa, Tāwhirimātea, Rongomātāne, Haumietiketike, Tūmatauenga and Rūaumoko are Maori Gods who are part of te Ao Māori. They are our whakapapa, our stories that explain the creation of Aotearoa.
This is how darkness, the long night, became light. Nothingness became something, earth and sky were separated, and nature began.

Some of the artwork will be displayed in the library.
Rm 7 Science Experiment: Water Balloons and Pencils
On the 14th of May, Room 7 did a science experiment about balloons and what happens when you stick a pencil into a bag of water. Room 7 was asked what would happen. So we did the experiment, we needed: 15 small plastic bags, about 15 pencils per 2 people and a water source.
After our groups of 2 were picked by Mr G and told to fill up our small plastic bags and fill them up to about halfway, we lined up on the court while waiting for the other people to fill their bags up with water. We went off in our groups of 2 and 3 to find a spot to start our experiment. We got our bag and tried to push the pencil through the bag but sadly, we failed and bursted our bag. We went to grab another bag and fill it up with water. After we filled up our second bag, we tried again. We managed to push one of our pencils in! Then, we tried to put another pencil in and succeeded! So we pushed all our 19 pencils straight through the bag, we could have done more but we ran out of pencils. For me honestly, I didn’t think that the pencils would go straight through and not burst the bag. Well, it was a really fun and exciting experience for me and I hope that I get to do something like that again! - Joshua
In my group which had Sam, Euan and of course me, Marcus pushed 1 pencil through the bag and we succeeded so we pushed another one through and another one through until we put 23 in because the 24th one burst the bag. I figured out how to stop bursting the bag and put the pencil through. To get the pencil through without bursting the bag, you have to put the pencil in slowly and if you wanted to put some more pencils, you have to put them kinda far away from each other because it will pop the bag and because that's what happened to me. If you did the experiment, what do you think will happen? - Marcus
