Weekly Update from Bernadette Murfitt
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
We have had such a great start to the school year. Our students have been loving re connecting with each other and welcoming new students to our school community. Our staff have a real spring in their step after a great break over summer. We all know what we have to focus on in terms of being nimble and flexible in our new COVID world. Don't forget to scan as you come into school.
You may have read in the media lately about the teaching of Mathematics in New Zealand Schools. At Sacred Heart Cathedral School we use a combination of modern and traditional approaches when teaching mathematics. Modern being that we teach only a couple of strategies to solve problems. Teaching too many strategies can confuse learners. We really push the learning of basic facts so they are committed to memory ensuring students can recall these quickly. Our traditional approach also includes frequent Mathematical teaching and opportunties for revision, recording and book work. We provide valuable time for our students to practise what they have learnt.
Last night our staff attended the 2021 Commissioning Mass at St Mary's of the Angels. Cardinal John gave a very simple message and that was one of being genuine in our care for others. This manaakitanga will be my mantra for both my personal and professional life this year.
We are looking forward to Beach day this Friday at Oriental Bay.
Book your babysitter for March 13th Dine and Dance at Marist St Pats Clubrooms.
Looking forward to seeing you all at our "Meet the Teacher and Curriculum Information" sessions tomorrow.
Arohanui,
Bernadette Murfitt,
Principal, Sacred Heart Cathedral School
Dear God,
You come to us in Jesus who teaches us that the way to happiness is through our love for one another.
Watch over the teachers, students and families of Sacred Heart Cathedral School as we try to be faithful to this teaching.
Help us to be a welcoming and joyful community, so that others may come to know your love and peace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.

There will be 2 sessions:
3.15pm and 4.30pm.

Middle sessions will be in Room 6 (middle floor middle classroom).

Senior Pool Party on Thursday (25th February)
Our Senior Pool Party had to be scheduled on a Thursday this year due to Thorndon Pool not being available on a Friday for Swim Club. The later time is due to Johnsonville Pool rescheduling swimming lessons to Thorndon Pool. We decided to go with the date of Thursday, 25th February as it is a great opportunity for our Senior School parents to meet each other and it would conclude the Senior Outdoor Education Week.
We are able to have a sausage sizzle from 5.30pm at Thorndon Pool - this will be provided by Parents and Friends.
Pool entry will be paid for by Parents and Friends as well. If your child would like to use the spa, we ask that families pay for their own spa pass.
Thanking you all and we are looking forward to our Pool Party.

The Switch on Safety filter is simply applied by changing the DNS settings on a student’s device. This blocks unsafe websites such as those with scams, malicious software and inappropriate content, and our filtering technology automatically adds unsafe websites as they arise.

Parents can apply this free filter to their children’s devices . Introduced for the first day of Term 2 2020, the filter had been downloaded by 25,028 households to one or more of their children’s devices by the end of the Term, with blocks on 2.8 million unsafe websites and just under 500,000 online threats.
Keep an eye on this website. It is so practical and very helpful for families.
If you would like some Fonterra milk from our Milk in Schools Programme, we have a few cartons to give away.
Please let the office know if you would like some milk.
Parish Cathedral Restoration Fundraising

Our dinner organising committee will bring you special treats from across many cultures - Malaysian, Sri Lankan, Chinese cuisines and much more. Only $50 per person. Special family rate available for those with young children.
A special raffle will take place at the event with prizes to be won.

We are looking for businesses and/or individuals who would be happy and willing to sponsor various aspects of the fundraising dinner. Please contact Bing if you wish to learn more about how to support this event.
This year we are going to have a go at "Trash Free Tuesday." We as a school will try and decrease the waste that we are contributing to the landfill. We would like our students on a Tuesday to try and not bring gladwrap to school. Try and use small containers from home or a lunchbox with compartments. Throughout the year, we will give tips and tricks for reducing packaging. It is important that we all do our bit for the environment.
Piano Lessons
